Calling all Texas turkey hunters

This ol country boy from Ethel, Louisiana needs some help. I am looking for a place to turkey hunt in Texas. I want it to be a do it yourself at a reasonable price. No guides, no babysitting, just show me the property lines and let me go. Wanted to find somewhere by word of mouth by someone who knows someone or has had a good experience. I don t feel like traveling across Texas to look at a turkey lease. This does not have to be for this season I want to line up something and establish a relationship to be able to plan a trip every year. Any information would be greatly appreciated. You can email me any info. Thanks.

TPWD to Wrap up Dove Lethality Study

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials are content with the 1,360 birds collected during two years of field research comparing lead and non lead ammunition effectiveness for doves. Public concern about the incidence of lead in the environment is growing. This issue has been discussed by the Central Flyway for the past five years. It is conceivable that non lead shot requirements could be proposed for the hunting of all migratory game birds, including doves at some future date. This could have considerable impact in Texas, which boasts the nation s largest dove population at an estimated 20 25 million breeding birds and a rich hunting tradition that sees from 300,000 to 350,000 hunters take to the field each fall. Texas hunters harvest about 6.4 million doves annually or roughly 30 percent of all doves taken nationally. There is also an economic consideration. Based on a 2005 survey conducted for the U. S. Census Bureau and the...

Turkey Call Maintenance

I always lightly sand my box call lids and re chalk before the season starts. Also, if there is buildup on your edges, VERY GINGERLY use fine sandpaper to get the buildup off the edges. As for my slate calls, I use one of those 3m greenie scrubbers, and rub them in a circular motion on the slate and aluminum. You neet to also make sure the tips on your strikers are free of buildup as well. A little easy maintenance on the front end will help you to make sure you actually sound like a turkey hen on opening morning.

Are wildlife lovers killing quail with corn

Are those who enjoy watching wildlife killing our nation s wild quail by filling game and bird feeders with corn This is the intriguing question posed this week by Ray Sasser, outdoors columnist with the Dallas Morning News. Sasser quotes John Cox, a wildlife biologist, who has abandoned feeding corn in his personal feeders in favor of black eyed peas, which Cox said work just as well. Why Black eyed peas, unlike corn and other small seeds, do not become contaminated with aflatoxin, a deadly toxin that has been known to slowly poison wildlife. Many biologists now believe aflatoxin growing on corn provided in feeders might be at least partly responsible for dwindling populations of quail in many parts of their natural range. Secondary effects of aflatoxin, according to John Rollins, a West Texas quail expert, include diminished immunity, which makes birds more susceptible to disease. Feeding corn or other seed grains helps congregate quail, so disease can spread more readily. Feed...
