I ve been thinking about this proposed regulation that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering allow hunters to use silencers and sound suppressors on rifles to hunt deer. I m not sure how I feel about it. I already use a silenced firearm for whitetails. It s called a bow. The real discussion is about rifles altered so that the sound is mostly silenced or suppressed. None of the silencers I m familiar with are totally silent. And all of them compromise the speed and power of the bullet. When you fire a rifle, the bullet leaves the barrel at something in excess of 1,100 feet per second faster than the speed of sound. That crack you hear is basically a small sonic boom. To eliminate that portion of the noise, the velocity of the bullet has to be reduced within the gun, and that impacts the hunter s effective range. It s a matter of physics. The proposal that Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioners have sent to the Texas Register for public comment actu...

Attention all deer As hunting season approaches, please be aware that the guy who s about to shoot you may be invisible. Or so he thinks. W.L Gore and Associates, working with the HyperStealth Corporation have designed a line of hunting clothes they call Optifade . These clothes, they say, fool the deer s vision system at its roots, meaning when a hunter slips into his cap, vest, pants and hood not be seen. Click Here to read more. yes, this takes you to NPR website but still interesting Has anyone else heard about this before Or better yet tried it

TWA Legislative Update Update on deer legislation of most concern. Bullets for bills on selling venison, privatization, and a mule deer DMP for your attention The sale of venison from breeder deer...the privatization of deer...and a Deer Management Permit for mule deer. The Texas Wildlife Association is very much concerned about current legislative efforts in Austin that promote the sale of venison and privatization, as well as legislation creating a Deer Mangement Permit for mule deer that lacks a much needed research compnent. TWA is actively working to promote its policy interests as these bills are discussed and debated. Your awareness of these important issues will be critical as our organization and its members continue their communication with State Senators and State Representatives in the coming days.
This is a good article published by Steve Galea for BigGameHunt.net There was a time when hunters didn t have to think twice about transporting game and firearms across the Canada US border. Unfortunately, those days are gone forever. Now, more onerous firearms laws, fear of spreading game borne diseases, and post 9 11 security concerns have made crossing the border with firearms, trophies, or game meat far more complex. Here s a quick run down of what a traveling hunter needs to know. CLICK HERE to read Full Article

Whitetail Deer Hunting The Rut Trap

Great article by Kevin Wilson for BigGameHunt.net Whitetails have extraordinary eyesight. Their ability to hear the subtle snap of a twig is uncanny, and their sense of smell is remarkably acute. Simply put, whitetailed deer are the perfect forest dweller. Throughout most of the year, their ability to elude danger is impeccable. With this reputation, they are the perfect big game species. But, as with all formidable opponents, whitetails too have a weakness. Their natural urge to breed and defend territory causes them to let their guard down. Scarcely visible throughout much of the year, during the annual rut, bucks literally set their own trap. Savvy hunters looking to close a tag can take advantage of a wide range of indicators, strategies and tendencies to entice a buck to within shooting range. From interpreting rubs and scrapes to making mock scrapes rattling and calling, using decoys and even scents, the rut presents a unique time of increased vulnerability. For most whiteta...

Hog Wild Feral Pigs Invade Texas From Mike Von Fremd of ABC News

Published by ABC News Correspondent Mike Von Fremd DEL RIO, Texas, Nov. 13, 2006 A million dangerous pigs are roaming Texas soil, challenging farmers and devouring their crops. These animals have ravenous appetites and no natural predator in Texas. With the feral pig population exploding, game wardens are begging hunters to go after the wild animals. I often tell people to think of a feral hog as a four legged fire ant, said Billy Higginbotham of the Texas Extension Cooperative, which offers Texas A M research to state residents. We are not going to eradicate them what our hope is that we can reduce their population to reduce damage. That damage is costing farmers 50 million a year, and one farmer said his attempts to keep them out failed. In my sweet potato patch last year, I bought an electric fence and it has no effect on them, said farmer Lemar Bass. There are only two types of landowners in the state of Texas those that have feral hogs and those that are abou...
