Members Has anyone heard of an Association called Texas Hog Hunting Association I have a friend whom allows me to hunt Hog on their land and she mentioned that a person whom identifies himself as a broker or senior representative for the Texas Hog Hunting Association and has been harassing her about allowing it s members on her land as a business opportunity. This is frustrating for her since this guy just enters her land whenever he chooses and can t seem to take not interested as a reasonable answer. Being that I am a Texas peace officer I have advised her that she should write his license plate down, call the S.O. and report him as a trespasser. Fortunately for this obnoxious fellow she is nice and is not interested in taking legal action against his illicit activity. As with all these other hunting associations that have brokered land deals for their members I would like to bring to light that it is because of these associations that cause prob...

Helicopter Hog Hunting in Texas Made Safer with Industry Leading Aerial Safety Course Texas is home to a serious feral hog problem nearly 3.4 million at the last count ranking as the largest feral hog population in the nation. Feral hogs wreak havoc and cause extensive damage to property, livestock, crops and pastures across the state. The Texas Agri Life Extension Service estimates that statewide annual economic damage caused by feral hogs is near 400 million and expected to worsen in the years ahead. In an effort to help control this ever increasing population of feral hogs, the State of Texas allows certain helicopter operators to provide aerial hunting of feral hogs under permit from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Current laws allow for private landowners to contract for a helicopter service to perform this aerial hunting service, but the landowner, or any other hunter they may designate, is not allowed to shoot the hogs from the aircraft. There are about 170 per...

Using flour to attract hogs

I am always looking for new creative ways to improve my hunting and fishing success. Recently, I read a story about hunters that use regular store bought flour to attract hogs to the feeders and traps. It makes sense because flour is a type of grain that I could see pigs enjoying. But, what I also found out is that pigs like to roll around in the flour to help knock off the ticks and fleas. So when I found out my dad was heading to La Mota ranch on the last weekend of deer season I called him and told him about using the flour. He has alot of trust in me and told me he would stop at the store and check it out. So that evening he spread some flour mixed with corn in the hog pipe, underneath his feeder and in the hog traps. He even spilt some flour in the middle of the sendero on accident on the way to the blind. Well, the next morning when he was walking to the blind for the am hunt, he noticed all the flour was gone and the area had been rooted up by pigs, he could still hea...

Where s the bacon

This year it seems like the hogs and deer just aren t moving much at our hunting properties. Last year there was plenty of opportunity to harvest nice pigs over 200lbs and some good deer shot. There are signs of hog and deer activity, but very little and when we put up a trail cam to take photos, all we get is racoons stealing all the corn at night. The hog pipe has been taking hits, but we fill it up and it takes about a week before it gets hit again. There has been good hunting weather for pigs, days where it s nice cold and wet, but still very little pig movement This if frustrating becuase our ranches our located so far away from our home base of San Antonio and the little time we do spend at the ranch, we spend looking at empty feeders with no activity. Has anyone else been having such luck this year, some of the other hunters blame the bad drought we had two years ago, others are blaming the wet weather that produced much native food supply, limiting the need for wildli...

Split season dove hunting

As we were spending time at the ranch trying to harvest a nice buck or good eating hog, the second split season for dove was going on and man could I hear the neighbors just tearing them up. After we got out of the blind and walking back to the truck I could see huge flocks of whitewings and morning dove landing in the trees on our property. As we left the hunt location all the surrounding ranches were holding a tremendous amount of birds and there were some lucky hunters who were hunting them. I we weren t so desperate to shoot a deer, we would have been right there with them. Funny thing is we made it back home and were getting ready to fire up the pit and do some grilling when a huge flock of whitewings landed in the china berry trees planted in the front yard, since we live out in the country, my brother in law grabbed the .22 cal and tried his luck at dropping some birds for the pit, fired around 5 shots, but nothing dropped and the huge flock of birds just moved a few hundre...

It s been a good year

Recently me and my hunting partners brohter in law and son fished fried some Reds and Specks that had been in the freezer. We started thinking that this year has been the best year for us in the outdoors. We caught lots of fish at different locations, stocked up the freezer with bags of Reds and Specks, then we also had plenty of Wild Boar meat, Deer meat, and game birds. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to get out at least once a month, even with an extremly busy schedule and enjoy the great outdoors, but it s even better when we can take the spoils from our outdoor adventures and enjoy them as tasty meals for our close friends. This year we have had plenty of fish frys, outdoor cookouts and wild game meals that have been so special. We are not fancy hunters who have huge ranches or have a huge boat to go fishing, we do things the simple way. We hunt on two ranches around 150 acres, and do all our fishing wade fishing from the bank. What we do have is a trusty...
