Is Your Deer Hunting Lease Reaching Its Full Potential By Jeremy Flinn Buckscore Wildlife Biologist Each year deer hunters invest millions of dollars into hunting lease properties, including food plot planting, constructing deer stands, and especially putting gas into our tanks. A large portion of hunt clubs in the South lease their land from industrial timber companies. Nearly 85 of those white tailed deer leases practice some form of Trophy or Quality Deer Management QDM . But at the end of the season, after all the hard work and hunting hours are through, is your deer hunting lease really becoming the deer hunting mecca you dreamed of It was a hot July day as we walked through the pine stand. Last year s thinning had allowed much more sunlight to reach the ground, in turn sparking the growth of natural deer food. We headed out to a large food plot opening in which the club had called Centerfield because of its location on the property. Large, umbrella shaped weeds t...

Texas Hog Hunting Association

Members Has anyone heard of an Association called Texas Hog Hunting Association I have a friend whom allows me to hunt Hog on their land and she mentioned that a person whom identifies himself as a broker or senior representative for the Texas Hog Hunting Association and has been harassing her about allowing it s members on her land as a business opportunity. This is frustrating for her since this guy just enters her land whenever he chooses and can t seem to take not interested as a reasonable answer. Being that I am a Texas peace officer I have advised her that she should write his license plate down, call the S.O. and report him as a trespasser. Fortunately for this obnoxious fellow she is nice and is not interested in taking legal action against his illicit activity. As with all these other hunting associations that have brokered land deals for their members I would like to bring to light that it is because of these associations that cause prob...

Wall of Shame 8 Point Ranch

Just wanted to put a word out on a ranch here in Texas. I quit working at Eight Point Ranch in November as a personal chef after I discovered the owner, Bobby Girling, was stealing my tip money. If you have ever working in the hunting industry you know that tips are what we make our living off of. I worked hard for this ranch. Most days I was there at 5am and didnt leave until 9pm. I received a very low hourly wage and got no overtime even though I worked 14 16 hour days. My tips were my livelyhood. I had suspected I as being stolen from when I started seeing the big gap in tip amounts from when hunters tipped with cash directly to me versus it going through the office in check or credit card form. The amounts were hundreds of dollars apart. On top of that I was given excuses like Well, 200 was taken out of the tips for credit card processing of the hunt , or We havent got paid from that hunt yet. On the day that I quit three hunters that were leaving mentioned tha...

Does Hunting Deer With A Silencer Matter To You

I ve been thinking about this proposed regulation that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering allow hunters to use silencers and sound suppressors on rifles to hunt deer. I m not sure how I feel about it. I already use a silenced firearm for whitetails. It s called a bow. The real discussion is about rifles altered so that the sound is mostly silenced or suppressed. None of the silencers I m familiar with are totally silent. And all of them compromise the speed and power of the bullet. When you fire a rifle, the bullet leaves the barrel at something in excess of 1,100 feet per second faster than the speed of sound. That crack you hear is basically a small sonic boom. To eliminate that portion of the noise, the velocity of the bullet has to be reduced within the gun, and that impacts the hunter s effective range. It s a matter of physics. The proposal that Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioners have sent to the Texas Register for public comment actu...
