Member organizations of the Cooperative Alliance for Refuge Enhancement C.A.R.E , including the Congressional Sportsmen s Foundation CSF , reaffirmed their commitment to the National Wildlife Refuge System today in a meeting at the U.S. Department of Interior DOI . Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, along with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director, Sam Hamilton, and Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks and DOI Chief of Staff Tom Strickland spoke to the members about the importance of the National Wildlife Refuge System and the collective efforts of the C.A.R.E. coalition to support necessary funding to the system. The conservation agenda for the 21st century should surpass the conservation agenda that goes back to the days of Theodore Roosevelt, said Secretary Salazar. We are doing some heavy lifting against the backdrop of huge budget deficits, including funding for the refuge system and DOI in general. Sportsmen s access to America s refuge sys...

Stand Placement

Hope all is well for my fellow hunters out there. I have a question and would really appreciate any input you might have. I hunt in Hamilton County and I ve agonized about my stand placement this past year. I ve hunted on the same lease for 15 years and my stand has always been in the same location. My stand is in a clearing, with thick woods across from me about 150 yards and woods and a elevated ridge behind me. What would be my best option in placing my stand, hunting on a fields edge or up high on a ridge I ve seen lots of deer on the fields edge but most are small deer. Through my back window i have a spoke that I can see up the ridge and have seen some nice deer cross there. So to make a long story short, if I placed my stand on this field edge, I have plenty to see in front of me 150 yards and to the left and right of me 300 yards . On the ridge I cannot see the field as well but have a nice opening between two woods with deer trails. Should I place the stand on the ridg...

David Vance s Lake Fork Report

October is here and with it brings in some fantastic Fall Bass fishing. Lake Fork is in great shape right now and the fishing will only get better as the month rolls along. The water clarity is fairly clear mid lake to the south end.I have been catching fish on a number of different patterns and baits this past week. The shallow fishing has been best for me lately in depths ranging from 2 10 foot. With this cool cloudy weather we have had a good Spinner bait bite with numbers of good solid bass. Today we put 27 bass in the boat and all but three came on the Spinner bait. Fishing a Spinner bait over the grass on these cloudy days this time of year is a pattern that will work great all day. The Spinner bait that works best for me this time of year is a Stanley oz Chartreuse White Colorado Willow Nickel and gold blades. The areas we are fishing the Spinner bait have been points and pockets half way back in the creeks, there is a lot of Shad in these areas right now. This time of yea...
