Blackpowder Doe

It was time to put some meat in the freezer after spending the last month chasing a massive 8 point on the lease. I did get one shot at him with the bow but had the misfortune of hitting a fence wire instead of the buck. This doe wasn t a monster but the meat is tasty. The 295gr powerbelt did the job nicely with a short 40 yard tracking job.

My brother, Donny and son Riley and I went hunting again at the lease in Leander on Sunday evening. I say a nice trophy white house cat, an 8 pt and 3 doe but couldnt get a shot at the doe. Donny saw some small bucks and some doe out of range. Riley didn t see anything. My brother was the lucky one and shot a nice doe. He nicked the heart on the shot but it was amazing that the deer ran about 150 yards before expiring. Needless to say he is pumped and ready to stick one of the nice bucks we see in the trail cam pics. Here is a pic of the doe.

I m gonna try to take her to the lease this weekend for a crossbow hunt on youth opener. Then I will be in the DCNF on rifle opener and then the following weekend I will be back at the DCNF with my daughter to try to fill the doe tags. My hunting buddy will have his 3 boys out there on the second weekend, so we are going to have a big youth camp hunt weekend. Will have plenty of pics when I return.

Whackin and Stackin

Well guys I went back to the lease yesterday to try for a doe and got lucky again. My brother and I got to the lease at about 5 25pm and headed for our stands. I hunted one of the front stands instead of the stand where I shot the buck because the wind was from the north. The evening was pretty uneventful until right at last light. I noticed movement about 30 yards behind the feeder, picked up the binos and a nice doe was headed my way. The doe headed off to the left and circled around to the feeder. It was getting late so I had to turn on the Twilite Pin Light that Alan gave me on the texashuntfish.com hog hunt a few years ago. The doe posed broadside just 20 yards away so I drew, aimed and released. Thawack, I knew it was a good hit. The doe ran maybe 5 yards and then kind of strolled away. I heard her crash but knew better than to just head over for a look. I waited for the last 15 minutes of light to fade and headed to the truck. I met my brother halfway and we decided to go get th...

Opening day success

Thanks guys. This was not only a great hunt but our group was field testing a new scent neutralizer suit that is called X static. These are silver fiber suits and let me tell you everyone of us had deer directly downwind and nobody was winded. The tops and bottoms go for 25 to 30 dollars each depending on where you buy them. You can also get X static online. Now back to the hunt. We took off at 5 15am from my brothers house and arrived at the lease at 5 50am. We were on stand by 6 or 6 10am. My stand is a 12 ft tripod tucked into a stand of oak and cedar trees. The feeder is exactly 25 1 2 yards from the stand. At first light three doe came into the feeder. I thought about shooting the biggest doe but had to hold out because it was so early. Then I heard a couple other deer coming in but all were doe. By 7 20am I had 7 doe eating around the feeder. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw another deer coming thru the brush to my left. When his head came out of the brush it was this 8p...

I want some meat so something has to expire. I will hope to see one of the good bucks from the pictures but a nice fat doe would do just fine this early in the season.
