The rut is early in north Texas

Talked to a friend who hunts near Post Texas. A fellow hunter last weekend took a buck with bow. 5.5in base 4in mid beams 12pts. 25in inside spread. He shot a doe at 20yrds and this buck came out and stood by her until he was shot and ran 60yrds. He is going to have him scored. Also everyone on the lease reported the bucks runnin does and fighting. Looks like this will be a great year for large bucks, if I ever have time to get to the lease. The rain this year is great for the deer, but really hurts my construction business.

Tips on Improving Deer Nutrition

Improving Deer Nutrition Emily B. Flinn, Professional Wildlife Biologist, Buckscore Wildlife Management If you re thinking about food plots, mineral licks and supplemental feed when trying to improve nutrition for whitetails, then you have missed the most influential part of a deer s diet the natural browse. Think about it, a deer is only in a food plot a small portion of the day and will visit a feeding station occasionally, but they are constantly interacting with natural browse. Therefore, the majority of a deer s diet is composed of natural browse, making it is the most important area to manage. The next time you step into the woods, try to see the woods as a deer would, by looking at the amount of green vegetation that is 5 and below. If the vegetation is mainly above 5 then it is out of the reach of a deer and won t provide nutritional benefits. However, if there is a great deal of vegetation on the forest floor and below 5 , then in most cases this mea...

Just reading the title may make you think, Not this again. We know we are losing hunters in many states and not recruiting new hunters to fill their spots, we know that we are facing more aggressive anti hunting movements, and we know that non hunters are not approving the new Trophy Hunting lifestyle many of us have undertaken since departing from the old hunt for food. You re right, but that is not the type of North American hunting I m referring to. What I am talking about are the two main premises we base our hunting and wildlife management off of today the North American Wildlife Conservation Model , which generally states that our fish and wildlife belong to ALL North American citizens, and are to be managed in such a way that their populations will be forever sustained and the Public Trust Doctrine , which says that wildlife belongs to everyone and we share the responsibility and obligation to manage the resources. On this foundation, hunting has grown into a multi ...
