Bastrop State Park Rains. An update on the conditions at the park after heavy rains and flooding on January 26, 2012. Lots of erosion and work to be done. AmeriCorps workers cleaning out clogged culverts, building wind rows, and doing some great work. Yes, you can still got camping and hiking in some areas of the park. It s a good idea to call the park 512 321 2101 or check the website www.tpwd.state.tx.us before you visit.

Got this story and photo in an email from a friend. Loaded up and headed South of San Antonio to the ranch for a day of feeder filling and beverage drinking...maybe even tell a lie or two. I had brought along the bow because there are always hogs...always And why not get a little practice in with my new Z7 Extreme. So we get to the ranch unload our things and crack open a beverage... man it was HOT Cold drink was soooooo good and we had not filled the first feeder. okay, so we are not really filling the feeders. just more like checking to make sure they are being filled...... But it was still HOT After several more beverages and confirmation that the first 7 feeders were being filled adn we had watched tons of turkey and quail, i decided the next feeder we hit I was gonna walk to the near by tank and see if I could catch a hog laying on the edge in a wallow. Usually we see pigs and Javi s all over when we are driving around but today was hot and they were not on t...

Optifade Hunting Clothes Make Hunters Invisible

Attention all deer As hunting season approaches, please be aware that the guy who s about to shoot you may be invisible. Or so he thinks. W.L Gore and Associates, working with the HyperStealth Corporation have designed a line of hunting clothes they call Optifade . These clothes, they say, fool the deer s vision system at its roots, meaning when a hunter slips into his cap, vest, pants and hood not be seen. Click Here to read more. yes, this takes you to NPR website but still interesting Has anyone else heard about this before Or better yet tried it

The Contest Duckwhacker and Wingdinger Want to Take YOU Duck Hunting

After Duckwhacker and Wingdinger had such a traumatic and surreal experience, they were able to let it resonate how thankful they both were for what they have Family, each other, and many hunting opportunities that most people are not as fortunate to experience. When Duckwhacker found out he was the Best Story Winner he sent me an email with a very unique proposal for our community here at TexasHuntFish.com. He wanted to give his rewards to the winner of a little CONTEST. Read Duckwhacker s Contest Rules Carefully... 1. People write in a small essay as to why they want to go on a duckhunt with Wingdinger and me at our duck lease. The essay should include some background on the individual as well as their thoughts or motivations to go out on a duck hunt. Whether it is to learn about duck hunting or even if they are a pro, and just want to try hunting someplace else. 2. Wingdinger and I judge the winner. The hunt can take place in December or Jan. We basically make the call ...

URGENT ACTION NEEDED Texas House Passes Bill That Treats Sporting Dog Kennels like Puppy Mills HB 1451 aka Puppy Mill Bill passed out of the House. We have discussed this topic for several years within our TOP meetings and I hope that you all realize the critical need to take action to help defeat this effort. It does not exempt sporting or working dogs, fees are exorbitant, it will require 14 new staff at the Department of Licensing and Regulation to carry out this new law, it does not deal with commercial sales but number of dogs, regulations are more stringent than science based USDA breeder rules, USDA permitted breeders are not exempt from rules, provides overly broad search and seizure powers, and creates an enforcement slush fund that could be funded by and directed by animal rights activists, among other issues. Organizations should send in letters to ALL 31 Senators. Senator John Whitmire of Houston has agreed to carry this bill in the Senate and the bill ...

Bow Hunting For Prairie Goats

Good article written by Kevin Wilson for BigGameHunt.net Just 20 minutes earlier, I d spotted a handsome buck at nearly a half mile away. Following a careful stalk, he was now standing 150 yards out. Surrounded by a harem of eight does, he was yet unaware of my presence, but clearly agitated by the decoy. One thing was certain though, his posturing suggested a response was imminent To prompt aggression, I bobbed the head of the silhouette. To enhance these gestures, I employed my antelope challenge call. That was just about all his does could handle. Emitting an alarm sound followed by an explosive burst of energy, he rounded up his does and bolted for safer ground. In most instances, this would have spelled disaster for the hunting archer. I, on the other hand, don t always know when to quit, and consequently kept an eye on him and it was a good thing too. No sooner had he run off his harem, when suddenly, it was as though someone had flipped a switch. Head down, darting toward...

WHITE BASS ON THE RUN

By Luke Clayton When it comes to fish species that are tailor made for youngsters, the white bass nicknamed sandbass in many regions and channel catfish come to mind. Both species are often plentiful and, at the right times, easy to catch. In a month or so, channel catfish will move into the shallows to spawn, where a bit of catfish bait under a floater easily entices them to bite but right now, the white bass is stealing the show across the state and much of the country. White bass can be caught in creeks and rivers above reservoirs during their annual spawning runs but timing these runs can be tricky. Flow in creeks and rivers trigger the white bass to move from the reservoirs to deposit their eggs and then fertilize them in the current. Some fish species eggs are laid in nests or beds but current and movement is necessary for white bass eggs to hatch. A big misconception is that all white bass lay their eggs in streams and rivers. As Richland Chambers guide Troy Spruce wit...

Tide Changes are the Key to Successful Fishing

Most any fisherman who spends time on our local waters has a theory about how the tides work and where they need to be to catch fish during those tides. Suprisingly enough there are plenty of people who don t understand how important the tides really are, or for that matter what a tide is. According to Webster s dictionary, tide is the periodic variation in the surface level of the oceans, bays, gulfs, inlets, and estuaries caused by gravitational attraction of the moon and sun. The influence the moon has over the tides is extreme to say the least. During the the first and third quarters of the moon phase the tides are the weakest and have the smallest differences between the highs and the lows. These small tide changes are called neap tides . On the other end of the spectrum are the spring tides , these occur when the moon is new or full. During the spring tides the differences between the high and low tides are the greatest. By thinking about these patterns you can understand why ...
