Good News, Bad News

Texas Deer Hunting Season ends today except for Doe Spike Season in 30 South Texas counties. Bad News Neither of my three kids asked to go hunting with me this season. School, sports, scouts and family dominated the last 90 days. Breaking my ribs the week before archery season did little to help. It is hard to draw a recurve, fill a feeder, ride an ATV, or clean a deer with broken healing ribs. Good News The buck doe ratio on our land in East Texas and in the Hill Country has not been higher in my lifetime. We saw the largest bucks in many years in both areas, and the most number of individual bucks. There are three mature trophy bucks than should be even better next year, two of which have never been seen before until this season. The wonders of whitetail.

Hunters, guides and land managers need to be aware of the BIG changes in hunting regs and permitting for the upcoming season. Below are key changes to licenses, substantial and sweeping changes to deer regs, tagging and cold storage, new early deadlines for TTT site inspections before the regular season ends , enhanced dove bags limits, and proposed late season waterfowl regs. Please refer to the TPWD Outdoor Annual that can be obtained where you buy a hunting license, or at TPWD website at http www.tpwd.state.tx.us publications nonpwdpubs media regulations_summary_2009_2010.pdf Licenses Licenses go on sale on Saturday, August 15, and most licenses were increased 3 5 about 2 4 . The Super Combo will be 68, but it is still the best bargain. Waterfowl hunters should note that the federal migratory stamp Duck Stamp will cost 15 17, depending on where you buy.
Is this Hill Country Buck too YOUNG to shoot

I have watched this buck for two years now, I am not an expert, I think he is 3.5, maybe 4.5. However, after looking at a number of photos of deer on Vicente Pena s DVD, I realize that I think deer are 1 2 years younger than they really are. Therefore, I took these photos today with the intent to post them and see what ya ll think.

Great looking Hill Country Bucks

We have NOT had any rain, so all I can credit is the 3rd year of full time protein feeding record rack , shooting lots of does, and not harvesting a buck in recent years. There is a mix of wide 8 point genetics and tall 10 point genetics. If I am lucky, the female offspring of one to mate with the other.

negative impact of feeding deer

rwg15, Although I disagree with your comments and conclusions, we here at TexasHuntFish.com want our forum to entertain the full spectrum of opinions. Your more recent posts have departed from an attempt to express an unpopular opinion, and become non educational, non informative jabs for lack of a better word. Respected members of our forum have also responded with comments that do not contribute to the eduational value of this thread. As a result, with an effort to honor people s opinions, we have deleted a number of comments from a number of members in this thread. IF YOU DON T HAVE SOMETHING INFORMATIVE TO SAY, PLEASE DON T RESPOND WITH PERSONAL ATTACKS THAT ADD NO VALUE. Couple of points I wanted to make In Texas, the landowner does NOT own the wildlife on the land. The industry of Deer Farming did not start in Texas and is not unique to Texas. People profit from wildlife in many ways more than hunting. Animal Planet, National Geographic, and every grocery and pet sto...

After over 25 years of Quality Deer Management, they found out that they were losing their lease. There was only one thing to do, GET BUCK WILD This photo, and the quote from the sender, brings up a host of different emotions and responses. The perception that after years of quality deer management, that somehow ownership of the deer transfered to the hunters is strange Assuming this is a real photograph, those are some amazing deer, any of which would be a lifetime trophy on my wall. The landowner, by leasing the land, gave these hunters access and opportunity to exercise good deer management, resulting in these deer, at a fraction of the cost and liability of owning their own ranch. I find it sad and difficult to understand that they would ruin all of those years of work, and violate their own committment to quality deer management, by harvesting all of these bucks. Not to mention, as someone else commented, pictures like this are just bad for the hunting business.
