I was visiting a ranch owned by Mr. Germer recently. As we drove a Polaris Ranger around the ranch we approached a fence line with a gate. I noticed he wasn't slowing down and since I was busy looking around, I didn't realize until the last minute that to the left of the gate there was an opening in the fence.

We slowed down to about 5mph, crossed the "ATV Cattle Guard", and continued on our way. I thought for a moment to myself how convenient the crossing was and had to ask where he found this cool idea.

He said he actually designed it and had a local welder make it. Since then, the welder had contacted him to ask permission to make similar ATV crossings for other local ranches because people love the idea.

I have to admit, I now want one for our place in East Texas.

There is still a gate to bring in the big tractor or a truck, but for going around the ranch that has lots of cross-fences, this is very convenient.

I saw this in the image gallery and didn't realize it was for ATVs, I think it's a good idea. Maybe even a good idea to make a pedestrian one for hunters, in places you don't want vehicles.

I would be worried to a fence would hurt.

They've had these back in Missouri for as long as I can remember. My uncle had them on his farm also. They work great, the cattle won't step through them! I'm surprised that they seem like a new thing here. They are just called cattle guards there. Much easier than gates in most instances.

In Texas, cattle guards are usually flat with the ground level, with a hole underneath them. I have never seen one raised up like this one.
