Kansas Buck
Category: Native Animal

Tough hunt in Kansas for this old smokepole buck.

Very hot (several days at 90), plus the farmers hadn't been able to harvest the ag due to September rains and all the deer were out in the corn fields.

This was the only mature buck seen in 6 days of hard hunting for the three of us.  We tried a little of everything and this 5.5 year old mid-130's buck just simply made a mistake on my last afternoon.  Set up on a travel corridor and he showed up about an hour before dark.

I saw one that actually scored more, but he was only 2.5.  To me, the trophy is in the age...not always the size.  Those mature bucks are just different animals than the youngsters.

I feel fortunate to have gotten him.

He's a big one, and I really like his rack, neat points. Congrats Hardy, it's all there in the look on your face!

kes,  He was a big one.  We guessed him at 275+.

selturner,

Yes, but there are plenty of tags available in our region now.  Last year you could transfer landowner tags if you didn't get drawn and that was what we had to do...none of us drew tags.  This year you can't transfer, but they increased the number of tags and we all drew.  We also had an agreement in our lease just in case we didn't draw.
