Gulf of Mexico -

An exotic, large species of shrimp is being found once again in the Gulf of Mexico and posing a potential threat to the $700 million Gulf shrimping industry, according to Tony Reisinger, a Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent for marine resources in South Texas.

Lake Austin gave up the third Toyota ShareLunker of the season to Austin angler Brett Ketchum January 29.  The 13.0-pound bass is the thirteenth ShareLunker to come from the urban lake.

Despite recent test results showing zebra mussel DNA to be present in several North Texas reservoirs, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) officials remain hopeful that the invasive aquatic species is still confined to Lake Texoma.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering opening deer hunting in three North Texas counties and another on the upper coast this fall as part of recommended changes to the 2012-13 Statewide Hunting Proclamation.

Landowners will be able to contract directly with nuisance alligator hunters under new rules adopted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

Bass Champs kicked off the first of five events for their Central Region anglers January 28, 2012 on lake LBJ. Twenty one teams were awarded checks in this 105% payback event, but Lance Dillard and Lee Beuershausen were the big winners, taking home more than $25,000.

Several species of grouper, including black, red, yellowfin, scamp, yellowmouth, rock hind and red hind will close to recreational harvest from Feb. 1 through March 31 in Gulf of Mexico state waters excluding Monroe County.
