If only it was caught on film!Written on: 04/09/2007 19:21 by: Jason Parrish
I was driving a Bad Boy Buggie in the woods of East Texas on my way to call coyotes. I kept it in two wheel drive thinking I would get longer battery life. I came across a big tree laying across the path. I gently nudged the tree with the intent to push it about 10 inches to make room to get around it. Before you think I am crazy, I have done this with a Polaris Ranger without a problem. All of a sudden the Auto-4WD kicked in (which I forgot about); the front tires grabbed the thick pine bark; and before I knew what had happened the Bad Boy Buggy "jumped" up on the log. As this happened, the 50lb bag of corn in the front basket came flying over the steering wheel, smack me in the chest, and fell between the Rifle Rack and the steering column It came to a rest on my foot, pressing the accelerator to the floor. With whirling noise, trying to pick the bag of corn off my foot, the front wheels spinning in the air over the tree, and the back wheels bouncing off the ground behind me, I finally regained control. No big deal. I will use the winch and pull the Bad Boy Buggie off the tree. Well, Pine is a soft wood and I guess the frame of the Bad Boy got a nice grip. There wasn't a good tree in front of me, but there was a good tree at 10 and 2. I hooked up the winch to the tree at 10. As the tension increased on the cable and I started to pull the Bad Boy Buggie off the tree, the side pin (roller) on the winch popped out. That was OK, I hooked up to the tree at 2 and started to pull the Bad Boy Buggy off the tree until the right side pin on the winch popped out. Hmm. Not much choice now, I kept on pulling the Bad Boy Buggy off the tree but the angle of the cable without the roller put enough of a bind on the cable that it snapped. High and Dry. No coyote hunting today. I walked back to my house (1.5 miles) and got a 600cc Yamaha Grizzly. It is a super powerful ATV that I use to pull a 48" brush mower through the heaviest East Texas thickets without a problem. I was sure the Grizzly would yank the Bad Boy Buggie off the tree. I didn't have a chain, but I had some marine rope I use to use to tie up a 35,000 lbs boat so I was pretty sure the rope would hold up fine. I was wrong, the weight of the Bad Boy Buggy was too much for the Grizzly. It has plenty of power, but all four wheels just spun in the sand. Now remember, I am down a small path in the deep east texas woods. I had crossed a creek and was concerned that my truck would not get this far. I went home and decided to digest the situation and come back later with the TexasHuntFish.com Hummer H2 SUT. Why didn't I just get the Hummer first? The Hummer pulled the Bad Boy Buggy off the tree like it was on a slide. Almost in the clear. I was hoping I could tow the Bad Boy Buggie behind the Hummer but it swung from side to side out of control. Long story short, I made lots of of little trips, getting out of the Hummer over and over to adjust the steering wheel of the Bad Boy Buggie until I got everything to a road that my wife could drive her car down to meet me. Then, I walked back to the house, drove back to the Hummer with my wife, had her drive the Hummer and I steered the Bad Boy Buggie. By the time everything was back at the house 6 hours had been spent. I learned many lessons which I hope to not repeat.

Another Parrish Adventure :-) I really enjoy reading them.
Jason, you might want to carry a small chainsaw on your rig and a rope to drag them out of the way. Also, when you have to tow something like that, tie a rope to your steering wheel and the pedal or something, it will limit the amount the front wheels can turn and it will follow the pulling vehicle.
Matt, I'm going to guess that it don't. I figure the neighbors would have heard Jason if in fact it does make a sound.
