By default we recently became the new owners / caretakers / managers of our families 210 acre ranch located in southern Starr County (that's right, way down there near the war zone)....

Altamira ranch was formerly used as a cattle free-range ranch as well as some light deer and bird hunting. After exensive mismanagement by a family member, it no longer has any cattle, and the infrastructure is in need of some renovation and repair, all of which we are doing.

Since I last posted here, we have moved north of Latitude 26 (Port Isabel) to the Rockport area, and we now spend our time between the ranch and the coast, where our boats reside.

Our plans for the ranch are to game fence approximately 40-80 acres immediately and manage a small herd of exotics and native game, as well as game birds providing hunting opportunities in the very near future. We are currently working with USFWS and NRCS to restore the habitat, alhough much remains native and never rootplowed. We have the one essential element that all ranches wish they had: a seemingly endless supply of auga dulce supplied by our well. It is wonderfully sweet and we produce over 1000 gl/day.

We are also working on promoting ecotourism at the ranch combined with a distinct turn of the century bed and breakfast type atmosphere. All of this is a huge job for two aging biologists and their teenage twin daughters, but for us it is a labor of love. You can find us on facebook at: Altamira Ranch (at 49 El Tanque Road Rio Grande City) as well as our blogsite: www.altamiraranch.blogspot.com

I will keep this site up to date with our adventures and progress as well since we are going to primarily be involved in a small boutique style hunting operation....

I'll periodically tweet updates as well.

Hasta pronto and Que lo vaya bien y'all....
