Coyote not SO UGLYWritten on: 05/27/2010 07:49 by: aussiejohn
Coyote not So Ugly. By Aussie John Coyotes have always had a well earned howling reputation as the bad guy! This Aussie was deep in the heart of Texas. It was early spring and the cattle had just been corralled, drenched and branded the day before. It sure was a sight to see all that cowboy style action and roping on horseback. It was great for this Aussie city slicker to be a part of it! I was hunting on 4500 acres and the ranch owner, Cheryl had said. “Y’all keep an eye out for coyote’s” on the prowl while your hunting hogs ‘cos they will be hanging around the cattle waiting for a young calf on its own”. Next morning while hog hunting I kept an eagle eye on the cattle. Sure enough 5 coyotes were spread out in the herd; like bandits at the OK Corral, and were trying to separate a young wiener calf from the herd. I cranked up the Burris Black Diamond 4x16 and fed 1 130 gr 270 win into the breach of my single shot. I was belly down with my Thompson Encore Prohunter and took out my first coyote at 150 yds resting against the bottom of a fence post. Score by midday was: 4 coyotes down. By the time I reach the other side of the ranch that afternoon, coyotes had downed and killed 1 calf. Damn it. They didn’t waste any time making a meal of the wiener. I added this completely hairless mangy coyote to my tally, while it was busy eating the insides of the calf. I got within 125 yds, the 130 gr exploded on delivery. He didn’t know what hit him. Now that was coyote ugly! The hog hunting was great, taking during the stay 6 huge Texas Hogs, it certainly felt like the Wild Wild West, that’s for sure and I cannot wait to get back one day for some more action! Aussie John, we dont have coyote in Australia, we have Dingos. Comments: |
