 48 hours in Texas

to down as many hogs I can find!

This Aussie found himself somewhere between Heaven and Hell in the hog hunting Counties of Nth West Texas U.S.A. where 225 out of 254 Counties have HUGE feral hogs with a population in Texas reaching 2,000,000, causing some $52 million in damage. Ranch owner and good friend Cheryl, needed some ferals exterminated, it was time to help her and to put the hammer down on some of those “World Class Texas Hogs”.

It was early October; I had a 2 day window of opportunity before Elk & Mule deer hunts in Colorado, so I hit the ground running. The first thing I did upon arriving at Cheryl’s ranch was to study the sign and determine how fresh it was. I wanted to take advantage of these wild hogs as they can be creatures of habit with their repetitive behaviour and patterns.

It was like a hog-town hoe-down during the 48 hours with a grave yard of boars, sows and a few coyotes thrown for good measure.

Around 5.00am with a cool breeze blowing into my face, I headed off with stealth in the predawn shadows. I was nursing my favourite Thompson Encore pro-hunter 270 centre fire topped off with a 4x16 Burris and a good supply 130grain Remington Core-lock misery pills to complete the mission. It wasn’t long before 10x50 leica’s ultravid’s aided me to zero in on hogs moving in the darkness. Everything is big in Texas including the hogs! Head down and bum up, so as not to be been seen amongst the thorny mesquite and scrub. Cocking the hammer and squeezing off a shot, produced a dull thump, more dull thumps and squeals rang out again and again as the hog numbers dwindled and my tally rose.

The biggest turned out to be 350plus lbs of fast and furious action on the run. 1st shot was a home run with a high shoulder hit, causing massive heart lung and spinal cord damage which brought the bear like creature crashing down.

Considering a 28 hour international flight to get there, it would have been hell and a death wish to have slipped up or goofed with these monsters. With European monsters cross breeding you have to take care of what you might bump into. On this encounter the odds had worked in my favour and I was in heaven... ............... “This was the most fun I’d had all year with my clothes on” .........................
