My main partner-in-crime and hunting buddy Billy
Rhodes and I are in New Mexico winding down our second
day of what has been one helluva 3 day pronghorn trip.

We chose to spend this afternoon plinking prarie dogs
at 300-600 yards simply because there is nothing left
to do.  We have tagged out.  Matter of fact, our
entire hunting party of 7 has.

Truly an incredible ranch here south of Raton, we must
have seen over 200 bucks in around a day and a half.
It's been a dry year, but we were still able to take 2
very nice representative trophies.

Our guide Cody put me on just a beast of a buck around
9:30 the first morning.  We stalked under a small
ridge and he soon appeared following his harem.  He
closed to within 250 yards by the time any of them
realized we were there and I was able to take him.

Billy actually passed the buck he ended up taking, on
the first day, only because by then we had sensory
overload and neither one of us could determine just
how good he was...he was fantastic.  We actually have
live photos including him breeding a doe (I'd say he
had a great last day).

Billy caught his buck this morning after he had run
off several would be competitors and was returning to
his ladies.  He never made it back.  One thump from
his new rifle and it was all over.

The average buck in the camp scored just under 80"
(B&C is 82 I believe), and we were fortunate to have
taken the two largest.  Billy's buck was 15 1/2"+ and
scored 81 4/8.  And while mine wasn't as tall at just
over 15", his mass got him to 82 4/8.

To be able to hunt together and give each other crap
the entire time made this incredible experience all
the better.

Good Hunting.

Hardy

That is a great looking pronghorn. I also want to know about the rifle and scope in the photo. Looks like a weatherby. If so, which caliber? And which brand/magnification scope? I ask because I literally am sitting here looking at weatherby, kimber and remington rifles, trying to decide between .270 and .257 calibers.

I'll get you all the info Jason. It's a custom rifle by Bob Hart. I'll get Billy to fill you in about it and mine (I bought one of his older ones).  I can tell you that he's shooting a .308 and I'm shooting a 7mm Mag., but obviously you can choose what caliber you like.  He's out for the night...the prarie dogs were a bit much for him.   We'll plink a few more tomorrow before heading out for Amarillo.  Get you the details then.

Way to go Hardy, sounds like you guys had a heck of a time.  Those are some great looking pronghorns.

Looks like a great hunt. I love New Mexico. When I got my pronghorn several years ago, the experience of being on a big New Mexico ranch, and driving around all day was just as much fun as the actual hunt. Great part of the country.

Jason,

the gun Billy has is a .308 Winchester Match with a Remington 700 action, Hart Barrel, McMillian A2 Stock, Jewel Trigger and Leupold Mark IV LRTM1 4.5x14x50.

I can tell you that it is deadly.  We didn't bring anything other than our two big rifles and both this one and mine were tagging prarie dogs out to 600 yards without any problem.

Mine is just a rebuilt Sendero, rebedded, action has been trued, chamber's been squared and crown has been done.  Leupold Vari X III LR 4.5x14.

It's the first "custom" rifle I have owned and I absolutely love it.

Dana & Duckwhacker,

Thanks, we had a blast.  I agree Duckwhacker.  This is my second trip to NM and I have really taken to the place.  I love it.  Such "big" country.

Great Pics Hardy! On my way to Colorado this summer it was awesome to see those guys roaming the Prairie.

What a great hunt!  Everyone limited out, and you guys got to great looking goats, I guess you can't ask for anything more than that,   Congratulaitions to both of you.  Great pictures as usual.
