Today i had the biggest scare of my life... I was at work about to eat lunch and my wife called me and told me that my best friend and bird dog was gone.  Camo is a yellow lab that just turned a yr old in July.  We also have my brother-in-law's dobie for a few weeks.  We live in a housing development in san antonio and my backyard is very big and fenced in with gates on both sides of the house. Last night i mowed the yard after work and i forgot to shut the gate and lock it. My wife always lets them out in the back yard in the morning when it's cool so they can run and play. When she went to let them in they were gone!.. she took off running down the street looking for them.(she's 8mths Prego) A guy stopped her and said that he saw a guy in a car trying to get the yellow one in and the brown one ran.  My wife was on the phone with me crying so hard I couldn't understand her.. Everynight we walk them around the housing development and we always go the same way, it basically makes a big square, so she ran home and got the truck and took off the way we walk.. she didn't find them but the boys on the corner said they saw them go past.  She drove the square that we walk and didn't see them.. I think they must have been up in someones yard b/c she drove it again and found them on the corner of our street on their way home.. Judging by where the ppl live that she talked to who saw them i think they got out walked the route that we always walk and were almost home when she found them.. It was def. a big scare I dont' know what i'd do if I lost my dog!! I know one thing for sure i will NEVER forget to lock that gate again..  I know anyone that is as close to their dog as i am they know exactly how i felt when my wife called me.. I guess everything turned out alright though, he's laying at my feet in front of the fan now!!

Whew!  Glad there was a good ending!  Once the same happened at my place but without as much worry -- the wife opens the garage door and Arrow is laying in the driveway.  He got out of the open gate and then after whatever exploring he may or may not have enjoyed, he came back home before we knew he was loose.  I've had him microchipped and he wears tags, but I still don't want him loose for a moment.  Too many things can happen too fast.  Glad your hunting partner is back home safe!!!

My dog scared me like that once except he ran off chasing a jackrabbit and had me really scared for about an hour till he finially came back.

Good ending. My german shepard is 18 months old, very well trained, and the other day riding bikes with my kids she darted RIGHT IN FRONT of an oncoming truck. Literally, the truck skidded to a stop and the dog made it within 12" of not being with us. More than even losing the dog, I was disturbed to think that my three little kids under age 8 would witness such an event. I can walk her off leash with voice commands always, but I have learned that if the kids are with me, she must be on a leash if we are around "civilization".

I've been on both sides of the fence.I used to coon hunt and had a dog gone for 4 days.I was so grateful to the little old lady that called me, I told her if there was anything she ever needed just let me know. She said there was and handed me a plastic bag and a rubber glove and asked me to pick up the dog poop in her back yard.Yeah you heard it right ,all the dog poop. Not just from my dog but her dogs as well.Be very careful what you say.On the other side I went on a competition hunt  and lost my best dog.She was never heard from again. She had a collar on her that had my contact info on it and still I never got a call.Congrats on your recovery. There is no greater relief.

I lost my dog like that earlier this summer. I found her at the county animal shelter the next day. I got her microchipped the day after that.
