Product Review: Hoppe's Tornado BrushWritten on: 08/15/2007 11:30 by: txtrigger2003
A few months ago I noticed a unique style of bore brush marked down on the clearance aisle. Since I needed a new 12 gauge brush anyway, I bought it and was pleasantly surprised. The Hoppe's Tornado Brush is made of woven steel coils that form a spiral. My overall opinion is that these are worth the money -- I bought one in 20 gauge after seeing how well it worked. First of all, the brush does not have the sharp wire ends as typical bronze bore brushes do -- this means not as uncomfortable when tightening the brush down onto the rod (no wires poking your fingertips). More importantly, the brush cleans the bore well. When using a standard wire brush, I find spots get missed regularly and it requires several passes to get a sparkling clean bore. The design of the tornado style brush, however, means that there is more contact (yet less abrasive contact) within the bore on each pass. The first time I used the brush, it came out with long, very thin strips of black buildup that my wire brush had missed. I am told that a bore snake style cleaner is excellent as well, but with my $2.00 tornado brush and a mop my bores are now clean and bright enough to blind you. So, if you want to get the cleaning duties done more quickly yet still be thorough, give the tornado bore brush a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

TXTrigger2003,
Great, simple, informative, and to the point. This is exactly the type of "product review" I hope other member's consider writing so that we can all benefit from each other's success and failure. The equipment that we use to pursue our various outdoor passions required a lot of hard work and savings. As frustrating as it is when a product does not live up to expectations (can't wait to write about the deer feeder we assembled yesterday) to the item that works perfectly (my Garmin Rhino 530 GPS/Radio), an honest review from real people in the field who are not paid to agree is worth gold in my opinion.
I think I will try to pick up one of those I too have had the experince of the wire type cleaners not doing a satisfactory job. Great review!!!
Glad you liked the review. I, too, hope that we start sharing more and more practical tips and product reviews. Many members of this site, myself included, are relatively inexperienced and are trying to do our homework to make ourselves better sportsmen. Collectively we can share a variety of tips, big and small, that will benefit us all. I am anxious to see the reviews you guys put up!
As for this bore brush, I would just add that it is not some miracle product. I just found it to be more effective than the standard brush that I have used exclusively for many years when cleaning firearms. I would welcome anyone else's input on the tornado brush, whether you agree or disagree with my assessment, too. I recognize not all products perform to everyone's expectations. I'd like to see a review on the Bore Snake style cleaners; they are rather pricey and I have wondered if they get so grime covered that storage becomes a problem.
