GOOFY

I was bowfishing in the spring in 1968. The place was between Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth in the channel from the spillway into Lake Worth.  The water was high enough to overflow the road about eight inches.  My Dad had taught me to put a stick in the mud and watch it to see if the water was rising or falling.  A huge tree  had fallen over into the river and made a large eddy where the gar were playing. A small rivulet came between the root ball and the bank where I stood. I caught movement and looked and there was a big gar drifting down it. The arrow struck just behind the head, the gar stopped and then lunged out of the water up on the bank . As I was putting the gar on the 1967 Volkswagon, I noticed the water had risen some on the stick.  Better get out of there!  Driving along in nie inches of water I saw a blue looking hole ahead twenty feet from high ground. The only sthing left was to  downshift and hold a steady speed.  The bug's rear end would drop down deeper until the wheels touched then lurch forward a few feet and then do it again until it rolled up onto high ground.  Stopping to let everything drain and checking to see if my gar had made it too, I found that it was still sticking out beyond the bug about eight inches on each side. Aguy in a Ford pikup started to go through and assured him that he wouldn't make it and he kept sayin "Well you made it in that thing. "He was finally convinced not to try it.

that's a great story, have you ever thought about writing a book with all of your stories in it? I've read some good ones on here.

Fun story, Bill.  I used to have a 67 bug as well but I never tested its off-road capabilities quite like you did.  : - )

We were going hunting, my friend and I and this friend was rather tall sitting in the bug with his knees almost to his chin, looking at the ground in front of him and he made the statement "Boy if you were to have a wreck in this thing,  you'd be the first one there."

It was around 1969, I think.  I arrived at a day-lease ranch close to Mineral Wells, Texas to Bow-Hunt whitetail deer. It had been raining heavily, but that was not going to stop me. The rancher was looking at my bug sorta skeptically and told me to go on in and if I got past the first cattleguard, then he would come after me in his 4x4 jeep truck about two p.m. That was good enough for me..

I really gave the Volkswagon a test since I knew that help would be there soon.  Well, the day went on and ran into some deer, but that will have to be another story, and I drove on out and found that he was stuck before the first cattleguard.  He had also advised me not to get on the telephone right of way road cause it was bad.

After a while we got him unstuck.  I returned to hunt another weekend and he had been around the ranch seeing all the places the bug had been and was really impressed. All the Volkswagon needed was to be raised up a little more to get over the big rocks, then you'd be hard put to beat it's performance.

HAPPY

Reminds me of another time on that same ranch, I was bowhunting deer when I saw two Armadillos about 50 yards from their hole. I had a home made wrist rocket sling shot with 50 caliber lead balls that was very powerful. It had taken me some time and a lot of practice to be able to reach full draw without the ball slipping out of my fingers.

Well, as it happened, I threw a rock out amongst 'em and waited. They finally decided that they had better get back to the hole. Upon reaching full draw, the left surgical rubber tubing broke at the frame, coming back striking me on the right side of the mouth.  Lips all busted and swelled all out of proportion. I got over that alright, but never got up enough nerve to repair that thing and shoot it again.  1969 was a long time ago and if I ever shoot another wrist rocket, it will be from the hip. LOL
