The hog hunt was a blast this past weekend. We arrived at the ranch just east of Pearsall, Tx. at around 1:30 pm to setup camp. We had 5 adults and 3 kids on the hunt, it was the first hog hunt for all of the boys and one of the adults so there was much excitement. The folks on the hunt were Larry O'neal and his son Kyle, Donny O'neal and his boys Casey and Riley, Dave and Rick from Dallas and me. Once the tents were up we headed out to bait out some spots. We had several hunters so there was much work to do. We dug postholes at each hunting spot and filled them with corn and hogwild and pigout, baited a hog trap and set a varmint live catch trap. It was 4pm by the time we finished so we got ready for the first hunt. I decided to put up my ladder stand just 50 yards from the camp watching a road that we had baited. At about 6pm a nice bobcat came on to the road about 70 yards away. I have a nice bobcat mounted on the wall at home and sense this cat was headed towards one of the blinds that one of the kids was in I let him go. Not 15 mins later the cat came out again, must have caught the scent from the blind so I decided to take him for a nice rug. It was the first kill with my new Browning A-bolt .280, first shot at an animal and down he went. Kyle and his dad saw about 20 small pigs run by but did not connect on the shot. Another of the boys Casey was in a tripod and had 10 coyotes come out at dark but did not shoot. Dave, the adult that had not shot a pig saw 3 small pigs but no shot was presented. The other hunters saw nothing but deer, rabbits and rats, not a bad first evening. Friday night we did a little varmint calling and shot a few rabbits out of the truck, the kids had a blast. Saturday morning came and out we went. Donny and his boy Riley went to a tripod watching a large field. They had 15 to 20 deer come out into the field early. Around 8am a large hog started crossing the field. Donny took aim and shot with the .243, the hog did not even flinch. He went to take a look for blood and found none, the tracks from the hog were larger than his fist. The rest of the morning hunt was uneventful. Around 10:30am Larry, Kyle and I headed out to do some varmint calling. Our first stop was a spot I had stumbled onto during the morning hunt, we had no luck. We then headed to another area of the ranch where we had not been hunting, along a creek in some thick brush. At the first spot we called in 4 coons but Kyle missed the shot. Next we headed about 200 yards further into the brush along the creek next to an old dried tank bed. It wasn't 2 or 3 mins into calling when I heard a shot. Kyle had connected on his first ever kill, a nice big coyote. We sat tight and left the call on and another coyote came in but did not present a great shot and was missed. We went back to camp to see if anyone else had luck and Casey and Riley were skinning a possum they had caught in the live trap. While we were calling Donny had rebaited all of the areas again with corn, hogwild and pigout. We had lunch and headed back to the stands at around 4pm. I went to a tripod back in the brush, Donny went to a box stand with his boys Casey and Riley, Dave and Rick went to a big tower blind overlooking a big field and creek, and Larry took kyle back along a creek to hunt for the evening. Kyle got a shot at some pigs that were moving along as they walked into their spot but did not connect and saw a nice bobcat but did not shoot. Donny and the boys saw several small pigs and Donny shot a large sow with the .243 but no blood to follow. Dave and Rick had no luck. I saw some deer early, rabbits and rats, armadillo and the sun went down. It got really quiet and then all I could hear was the crunching of corn from the feeder. I looked thru the scope and could see several small hogs under the feeder. Then a nice 60 - 70 pounder came out. I put the crosshairs on his chest and shot. Squeeeeeeeel, I knew I had a pig. I went to get the 4wheeler and came back to get pig and there was a small 20 - 25 pound hog laying there. I thought he must have stepped in front of the bullet for his pal. I picked him up and headed back to camp. When I got to camp I cleaned the pig and then went to help Donny look for the one he had shot. I started to think, there were 2 blood spots under my feeder so I headed back to see if maybe I had killed 2 hogs with one shot and sure enough there was the 70 pounder laying just 15 yards from the feeder. There were no other animals killed on the Saturday evening hunt. I was beat so I went to bed early and did not get up to hunt on Sunday. The Sunday morning hunt was uneventful until we went to check the hog trap. Wow, 6 pigs in the trap. We let the boys do the dirty work with .22 rifles and pistols and we were off to skinning and cleaning. We broke camp and Donny went to pick up the live catch trap with his boys and they had a 20 pound coon in the trap. It was a great hunt that the boys will remember for a lifetime and the men will also. There were some new friends made and time spent with old hunting buddies. We had a total of 8 pigs, a bobcat, a coyote, a coon, a possum and several rabbits taken on the hunt. I have several pics from the hunt that I will add to this post soon.

Dave, It was fun, we will definitely do it again when the weather is much colder. If you get a chance to holler at Rick could you have him send the bobcat pics and any other pics he may have taken of you two or the ranch for the post up of all the photos? Now it's fishing season for me. I have 9 days off after friday and plan on doing a ton of fishing with the wife and kids. Look out whitebass here we come, I can already taste the fresh fried fillets.

Hey guys, I'm still working on resizing the pics but should have them ready soon. My camera takes the pics at such high resolution that I need to resize them to be able to post them. My wife is sending them to me here at work so I can get the sizing done. Don't give up on me, they are coming.

Great Post Garret, actually my partners and I are going down to hunt on Marvins place from the 1st till the 4th of April.(Full moon on the 5th) We have heard good reports about him and his area. Any pointers on where and how to hunt down there, it is our first time on his place and hopefully not the last. Thanks in advance.

Sorry guys I have been so busy I have been negelecting to get the pics resized so they will post.
Jerry,
I sent you an emial about the ranch but Marvin will show you around when you get there. Try to get there kinda early on your first day so he has the time to show you the ranch. He is a great guy, I know you and your folks will like him. Enjoy your hunt and let us know how the hunt went when you return.

GMAN thanks for the GREAT pics,
I wish we were going this weekend (one week to go) . I do have a question, what did you and your partners do about water (cleaning) and cleaning the pigs? Did ya'll quarter?, we are worried about a place to ice them down and get them processed. We found a place close to us that is open 24x7, but we are worried about keeping the meat good until we get back with spring like temps they way the are. Any suggestion would ONCE again be appreciated. We have a 120 quart cooler for food and drinks, and a few smaller coolers. HELP Look forward to hearing from you again
PS
Thanks for the email, Igot it. We will post pics if we have the luck that ya'll did.
Respectfully

Sorry Dave, I did not take that many pics other than the animals that were taken. Yes do have Rick post any pic that he has so we can see them.
Jerry,
There is a spot on the ranch that has water for washing down your pigs but we just brought our own because it was easier to clean the pigs near camp and not have to travel to the other side. I think that I brought 71/2 gallons of water and my friend had a 5 gallon cooler full of water. One of our party brought a 100qt cooler full of bags of ice and 2 large chunks of dry ice to keep it frozen and I froze my own ice for the trip and had a 90 qt cooler somewhat full. You will need plenty of ice to keep the pigs good and cold because it is going to be plenty hot.

Thanks for the information Gman,
Did you guys quarter your pigs, and or debone. We are trying to figure out how many coolers we need to bring and what size. How did ya'll store the meat until you got back to a controlled enviorment. We are going to be hunting Thrusday night, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. Any suggestions would be appreciated to make sure we are fully prepared with no surprises.
Thanks

Allen,
We had a pretty darn good time and some success on smaller pigs. There were some larger pigs seen but none killed. I'm sure the boys had a great time. Hope you can make the hunt next time. I'm headed to Decker Lake just outside of Austin on Saturday for the Hybrid/Whitebass fishing. I will have pics next week if we have any luck.
Jerry,
We just cleaned and skinned the pigs and tossed them in a cooler covered with ice. They will stay good for a few days in the cooler as long as you keep them covered with ice. I like to let my pigs stay in the cooler for at least 4 to 5 days completely covered with ice and water before I process them for the freezer. I think that this lets them bleed out really well and I find that the smell that some folks speak of with hogs is really reduced. Just make sure that you wash them off well before you put them in the cooler. If you need ice while you are down there Pearsall is just 20 min. from camp.

Well, I just got back from the follow up w/the orthopedic doc and he says I'm ready to start playing again. I had arthroscopic surgery done last Friday to repair a torn meniscus and while they were in there cruising around took the time to smooth out a few things that needed to be smoothed. Now I'm kicking myself that I didn't get it done sooner.
Anyway.....I had a BLT sandwich on the way back and it got me thinking about pigs. I know dove season is coming up but I'd like to propose that we try to set up a hog hunt for sometime in the fall. What I'm thinking is that if we could get it set up early enough that we could get a large place and have plenty of room for a number of folks. I don't have any problem with hunting during the summer but I guess that I've gotten soft in my old age and the thought of sleeping in a tent when the days are 100+ is not too appealing. The other thought is that dealing with a mess of old, stinky hogs would be a lot easier when the weather is a little cooler.
If anyone is interested, let's put our heads together and try to figure out a plan. OR....if anyone has any ideas how we could pull it off sooner, I'd be happy to hear them.
Good Luck and Good Hunting.
