DOG On Christmas day, the ICM family was paking the food in and Dusty was getting a bunch of the table scraps. (For any of you with labs, you know that they could win the Oscar for "Best Dog in a Dramatic Begging Role".) The next day I took her to work with me and all was fine for the first couple of hours and then I noticed her throwing up. It happened again a couple of hours later and then again and again. When we got her home, it happened one more time and it looked like there was some blood in the stuff this time, so we loaded her up and took her to the 24 hour vet up in Conroe. I thought it was a steak bone causing all the problem so they took an xray and found no bone residue inside her. Then they took a blook test and determined that she had pancreatitis - inflamation of the pancreas. It is caused by too much fat intake! They kept her overnight and gave her a couple of bags of liquid solution intraveinously. We took her to her regular vet on Saturday and he gave her another. She is back to normal again now, but her days of corn dogs at the Sonic and egg rolls from the Chinese takeout restaurant are over and done now. She is on a strict diet now, as recurrances are frequent and the disorder can be fatal..... Man I love this dog and don't want anything to happen to her....... What I thought was okay for her could have killed her!!! Be careful with your dog - feed them the proper foods and keep them trim and fit.

It is a scary time when you see your pet sick.  Glad she is doing well now.  We've been through rattlesnake bites, plate, glass windows, skunks, and porcupines with our German Shorthair....an every time you learn something new.

ICM, sorry to hear about the scare.  Glad to hear she doing fine now.

Same thing happened to my 9 year old black lab a few months ago.  We didn't notice any throwing up, she was just real lazy and wouldn't eat (which was hard to determine since we have another lab who sucks everything up in front of her).  We took her to the vet and they kept her for two nights on IVs and they didn't know if she was gonna make it.  Luckily she pulled through.

If thought of losing a friend doesn't stop you from feeding scraps, I know that the bill will.  In my case it was well worth it.  I'm glad she's still with us but now I have to eat all of the leftovers.

Thanks for the kind words, Ya'll. That is what seperates this board from most of the others. Dusty is doing great right now and has lost some of the pounds that the doc told us she needed to lose. She still acts like she hasn't had a meal in a week come meal time. The difference is that we ignore her now as we have finally realized we weren't doing her any favors by slipping her some of the 'good' stuff.......
