There are less than 90 days until dove season now. I just got off the phone with my contact down in Dilley. The South Zone season starts on September 20th and he says that opening weekend is something to behold. I have never hunted it in September - I usually go between Christmas and New Years and it is OUTSTANDING then - the best dove hunting I have ever had in the USA ( I limited out the first evening in about an hour and I am not that good of a shot.) - my contact (Fred) says it is even better on the opening weekend since they haven't been shot at yet. He had lined up some new land and has several thousand acres available for dove hunting this year.
I will be making the trip with Dusty the wonder dog (my yellow lab) the evening of Sep 19th and hunting the 20th and 21st. Is anyone interested in going down there then to hunt with me ? It will be $60 per person plus motel and meals.
Fred tells me that the motels in Dilley are probably already booked up but there may still be rooms in Piersall..... I would need some form of deposit from you to hold rooms for you. Doubling up would be downright economical as this ain't the Hilton.
Please let me know by July 4th and I will book the rooms. You don't have to pay Fred until you hit the fields.

Sure, Steve:
Doesn't look like there is much interest on the board for a dove hunt anyway. Call Fred Knapper at (830) 965-2837.
The daily rate has gone up to $60 per day, but there are birds out the wazoo there each year.

In answer to each question -
SACE: it is possible for just one day. You pay Fred each AM for the hunt that day. Please let me know which day and if you need a room.
SteveC: So long as you don't snore, I'll share a room with you.
Ya'll let me know and I'll find the motel closest to the hunt.

I'm going to try to get down there for a hunt Jim. I've been wanting to, but I dont want to say I can and then have to back out. Plus it gets me all excited and then depressed ;>)
These last few weeks have been really rough with quiting a job, getting a new one, selling a house and trying to get another house. I'm not sure what's going to be going on mid-September, but I hope it's me on a dove hunt with you guys.
Thanks for putting all this together. It sounds like an awesome place!

Allen - I sure understand the traumas of moving, having gone through it more than 30 times in my life - it never gets easier, only harder. The good news is you get to throw out all the junk that has accumulated. Dad used to say that three moves equals a fire.
Please let me know if you need a motel room and I'll try to line one up for you.
So far its SteveC, his buddy Jamie, SACE, Allen (tentative), my buddy Doug, possibly one of his sons, Dusty D. Dog and me. Should make for a good hunt.
Andy - if you decide that the agony of the mosquitos outweighs the extacy of early teal season, let us know!!! Two years ago the mosquitos (the state bird of Katy) were merciless and I did not go back last year.

The limit is 12 per day and 24 in posession. If you get caught on opening day with 24 you will get a big fine.

Unfortunately Gman is correct. The limit is 12 per day and i think the possession limit is 24, but I may be wrong on that.
In Mexico, the dove is looked as a pest that destroys crops. The limit (if there really is one) is 40 or 50 birds per day. I have shot them down there until the barrel is too hot to touch. (and that is shooting two guns!)
In the US it is considered a migratory songbird (and therefore managed by the federal government and not the individual state governments). It would be totally protected if it weren't for the hunting lobby.
Less than 10% of all dove deaths each year are attributed to hunting.
I would guess that more shot shells are consumed for dove hunting than any other hunted animal. In dilley, we should get our limits pretty quickly.

Ok, from what I've read "possession" when it comes to birds is no longer considered once the game is at it's final place. So if you take what you shot home in the morning and threw them in freezer, would you be able to shoot more in the afternoon? I hate to sound greedy, but this will probably be my only dove hunt this season, and I would like to have a decent amount for the BBQ during deer season.

SACE, not only is that highly unethical, it is also AGAINST THE LAW!!!!!! The daily bag limit is just that, DAILY!!! It does not mean that you can shoot a limit in the morning, go home and process them, then go out and shoot another limit!!!
"I hate to sound greedy, but this will probably be my only dove hunt this season, and I would like to have a decent amount for the BBQ during deer season"
Unfortunately, many hunters, especially dove hunters do this and think it's alright. It's called DOUBLE DIPPING and it's against the law. When I hear of people doing this, I do everything possible to report them to the authorities.

Relax Gmann, it was a simple question of how I percieved the law. I would be the last person to do anything unethical or illegal so please don't jump to conclusions unless you know me. I will shoot what the law says I'm allowed to shoot, I don't write them I just read them. Now my understanding of the game laws might not be as extensive as yours but I can guarantee you that I would never knowingly do anything illegal. I think you're getting a little ruffeled with little information but some people are just a little jumpy. So you are saying that the definition of possesion does not mean what it reads in this years 2003-2004 TXPWD handout? I know ignorance is not an excuse, and that is what I thought forums like this were for? To ask questions and get information on things you might not understand. So you should take a step back and deflate your chest a little. Appreciate you polite insight though.

Durn Gary - Who lit the fuse to your tampon ?????
You need to get your facts straight before you step into a board and immediately start criticizing - especially when you don't even undertand what the statement was in the beginning.
All he was concerned about was having enough birds to cook later in the year since this was going to be his only dove hunt - I even responded that I would give him some of my birds since I would be going on several more hunts.
Suggest that the next time you jump in with guns blazing you have a full comprehension of the facts.
Jim

Take it easy on old gary, he's a moderator at another site and is accustomed to dealing with a bunch of thick skinned ahole rednecks and outlaw barnies. I've noticed just about everyone over here is extremely helpful and nice a good reason why I keep coming back. I've met the guy, but I guess that's a hot button issue for him.

Sorry fellas, didnt' mean to come across in such a harsh manner. But "double dipping" as I call it is a common practice among many dove hunters, mostly on opening day and/or weekend.
As you might can tell, I have a real problem with it. Didn't mean to threaten you in any way or imply you were ignorant of the game laws. It's impossible to tell what hunting experience people have via an internet forum.
Jim, what facts do I not have straight??? Even though you responded that you would be willing to give him some extra birds, his initial post says that he "might" want to shoot a limit, process them, then go out and shoot another limit. How can my facts be not straight when someone says something like that? So you're saying that because it's his only dove hunt of the year, he can go out and do this???
I moderate another forum on another site. I do not and will not jump on someone, delete or edit a post without a full understanding of what is going on. I read the man's statement and had little trouble concluding it constituted double dipping. Now, the manner in which I made my response could have been a little better, I agree.
But when I see stuff like this, it really gets to me.
Have a good dove shoot SACE and I hope you limit out!!!!!

Also SACE, possession limit for an opening day of any season is ONLY that's days bag limit. The possession comes into play when you go on say a weekend hunting trip. You hunt two days and you have two limits of birds. You are allowed to bring all of them home. Now, if you go on a three day trip, you better eat some or give some away, because your possession limit is only twice your daily bag limit.

Gmann is correct, 12 birds is the legal posession for opening day unless you are hunting a 15 bird limit area. Now on the second day you can do the double dippin. Im just kidding Gmann, just giving you a hard time. Welcome to the forum. What is the forum that you moderate?

Gmann (with 2 n’s) :
I do NOT want to belabor a point here, nor do I want to have any additional acrimony on this board, but I DO want to have everybody get their facts straight.
You stated, “his initial post says that he "might" want to shoot a limit, process them, then go out and shoot another limit. “
That is incorrect, Gmann. Go back and read the post again. He simply asked “if you take what you shot home in the morning and threw them in freezer, would you be able to shoot more in the afternoon?”
All he did was ask the question. This is a discussion board and he was asking for guidance, which he got.
Gmann, you also said, “So you're saying that because it's his only dove hunt of the year, he can go out and do this???”
I do not know what leads you to this conclusion as I merely stated in my original reply, “I'll make sure you have plenty of doves. Since I will be hunting doves (hopefully) on several occasions this year you can have a bunch of mine.” Because I defended him in my next post also does not endorse ‘double dipping’.
Gmann you also stated “ I moderate another forum on another site. I do not and will not jump on someone, delete or edit a post without a full understanding of what is going on.”
I am impressed that you are a moderator on another board and I am also impressed that you attempt to hold yourself to such lofty standards. But after your two posts, it’s a bit difficult to believe that you meet these standards all the time.

Hey Allen - how far is New Brunfels from Dilley? Would Mrs Allen mind if we all bunked up there for the weekend????? ;>) LOL We might even help unpack and hang curtains and stuff!!!
