Hey guys,

Who wants to go on a hog hunt in south texas. The cost is $50 for three days. The ranch is 2000 ac. and part of the place is a vegetable farm with onions, potatoes, watermelon and cabbage. There is no lodging on the ranch but can camp out in tents or take campers. I want to set the hunt up for mid june when the moon is full on June 14, 15, 16. If you want to go let me know. This is a rifle, shotgun, bow hunt and there are supposed to be tons of hogs. The owner said that 4x4 truck is a plus and spot lights at night is suggested. If you would like to go respond to this post and I will get it setup.

Great, I was hoping that you would come. No, this is not the place that we spoke about, I got the lead on the hunt from Ray Holcombe here on the forum. I got a long email from the ranch owner and he said there are a ton of hogs. You are the first to respond and once I get a few people I will call the owner and set it all up. It should be much easier to kill some hogs with guns. If you have any other friends that want to go let me know. I was also hoping that Danny would be able to get away to come along. ICM you will be expected to be there also. Lets Go Have Some Fun.

Is this father's day weekend?   Not to sure mama will let me out of the house.   If not count me in.....and I know I could round up a few buddies if need be.  How people are you wanting to get together?

Well I checked the calender and this will be on Fathers Day Weekend. I think I can still get away but if it would be better we can push the trip back to July 12, 13, 14 which also falls on a full moon. Either way will be fine with me as long as we go on a full moon weekend so the night hunting will be better. Let me know what you guys think? I think I can get either weekend scheduled for the hunt as the landowner seems very flexible.

I totally forgot that was father's day weekend.  I don't think I can miss this one since it's my first.  If you guys go on the July one I think I can make that one.  I'll keep my eye out here to see how it goes...

Thanks for working on this gman!

I sent some questions to the landowner, here are his responses. I forgot to ask if we could shoot varmints but I will ask him befor we to on the hunt.

What is the cost per hunter for a weekend?

The cost is $25 per day per hunter or $50 for a three day hunt.

Where are you located and how many acres is the hunting area?

The property you will be hunting consists of approximately 2000 acres of farm and ranch land. The property is located east of Pearsall about 50 miles south of San Antonio down IH 35.

How many hunters are allowed at one time?

Don't actually have a limit on the number of hunters. Safety would be my main concern. I guess it would depend on your hunting desires, (still hunting, stalk hunting or night hunting). Give me a call when you have a good idea of how many want to hunt.

Are the hogs fed to keep them in the area?

We have 2 electric feeders feeding twice a day all year long. However the main attraction for the hogs is a good part of the farm is used for vegetable farming (potatoes, cabbage, onions, watermelons, etc). Hogs love that stuff, plus plenty of area for hogs to wallow in the water holes and creeks during the heat of the day.

How many hogs are each hunter allowed to take?

Hunters are allowed to kill as many hogs as they want. We just ask that you take what you kill, no waste.

Is there lodging or do we need tents?

No lodging available on site, you would need to bring campers or tents and supplies for primitive camping. The closest lodging would be in Pearsall about 15 miles away.

What weapons are allowed for use to hunt the hogs?

No fully automatic or assult rifles, other than that you can bring what ever weapon you want. Spot lights and four wheel drive would be to your advantage for night hunting. Scheduling your hunt under a full moon for night hunting would also be a big plus.

Thanks, Marvin

I'm game for a hunt, but don't want to sleep in a tent in June or July, so if anybody would want to split a room in pearsall, I'd be open to that idea.

June works better for me, but July might as well, just keep me to date on what the plans are.  Also, can probably recruit one or two other hunters if need be.

Thanks!

Do' Nob,

If you would like to go on the hunt in June I can set that up for you, just let me know. I just left a message with the landowner so we can reserve the weekend of July 11, 12, 13. I told him it would be between 6 and 10 guys. Here are the names of the people from the site that I currently have.

Clark Boyd

Steven Chartraw

OTHERS: I have 4 other guy that have reserved a spot but I'm sure there will be some that will not get to go. Check here on the forum from time to time to check out the need for more hunters.

I spoke with the landowner yesterday afternoon and here is the low down. The ranch is 2000 ac., 1200ac open irrigated vegetable fields that will have a watermellon crop in them at the time of the hunt and 800ac of brush with senderos, stands and corn feeders in the brushy area. There is a creek and the brushy area that will be good stalk or still hunting for daylight hours. To get around the ranch a 4x4 is recomended as the fields are irrigated and bring your spotlight. My brother and I will be bringing our 4wheelers for game retrieval and we will be hunting from them. There is no driving in the vegatable fields. If you plan on doing some stalk or still hunting or just walking around you will need snake leggins because of the high number of rattlesnakes. We can kill the rattlesnakes. The owner said that they have killed 10 or 12 already this spring. This is going to be a fun trip. Is everyone that I mentioned above going to go for sure? The landowner wanted to receive 50% of the money at the begining of June or we can just pay the whole thing and be done. I will pay the entire $50 at the time of the deposit and will need a couple of other guys to do the same to cover the deposit. I did not ask if we can shoot varmints but I bet the owner will be glad to get rid of the coyotes and koons that eat his crops. I will verify with the landowner that we can shoot these animals if we choose. Most of the hunting will be done at night with lights or from the full moon. Can't wait to go.

gman;

I just wanted to let you guys know that I went hunting at this ranch again on May 25th, 26th and 27th. Marvin is right about there being tons of hogs, but be prepared to HUNT them.

I got 4 hogs on the hunt and had a good time. Marvin is a good ole' boy and will treat you guys right. He also has 2 traps in the field if you want to take some corn and bait the traps. I did and thats how I got 2 of them. The vegitation is very thick and tall. It's pretty hard to see anything when you are walking.

Let me know if you have any questions about the area or the land owner and I'll tell you what I can. I have nothing to gain or lose by being honest about this hunt. I've hunted here twice and enjoyed both trips.

The rest of the spots are full at this time but any cancelations will be posted and the spots filled. There will be a total of 8 guys on the hunt which should give us plenty of room for safety.  I will be calling the landowner today to set the final details, get a map to the ranch and the address to send in the money. I will keep you all posted with the details.

Ok, I talked to Marvin today and we are set for the weekend of July 11, 12, and 13. We can arrive on Friday any time after noon. Marvin said he would be glad to meet us in Pearsall on Friday so he can show us around the ranch and the best places to setup. We need 4 guys to pay up front to reserve the weekend and I was hoping that the 4 from Austin will volunteer as it would be easier to collect the money. Allen, will this be ok with you? I will also pay up front along with the other two guy from Austin.

Well i have decided to bring along the Blackpowder rifle on the hog hunt. I think the 300 gr. bullet will do the job fine and I really don't get to hunt with the rifle very often. Here is a check list that the landowner said would help on the hunt.

4x4 truck. the fields are irrigated so it will be muddy

Snake leggins - lots of rattlers

spot light and flash lights

bug spray lots of it.

Yes, my friends and I hunt the Davy Crockett National Forest. If you like to hunt big woods for big deer, the DCNF is a great place. Maybe we can put a hunt together for some of the guys here on the site. I would love to show a couple of you guys around.

Well thanks Garrett, I also hunt Crockett during bow season....it's a great place.little scary out there for rifle though...some people just aren't very careful with "dem' guns"....I've hunted there the past 4 seasons....I have yet to bag  a deer..but I have had some awesome oppurtunites....just bad luck, and or aim..lol..no deer injured though....I'll have to see if and when we plan to head that way this year and maybe we could hook up and share some info on the areas we hunt....and I will be looking out for future posts on hog hunts...and maybe we can work up a hunt out a Crockett that would be a good deal...talk to you later..

I guess it could be dangerous but I have never even had a close call while rifle hunting in the forest. I hunt out of the trees when bow or rifle hunting so I usually get a good look at any other hunters in my area before they even get close to me. Once I see another hunter I can then signal to them so I know that they see me.To be honest, in the past 8 years I have not even seen another hunter from my deer stand. I like to try to find the places that most people won't hunt. These places I hunt are not always that far back into the woods either. I like to get to my stand at lease 45 min. before sun up and if I see another hunter coming towards me I shine my flashlight his way to warn them that there is another hunter in the area. One last thing, I always wear my hunters orange vest and hat. I have even shot deer at 20 yards when I used to hunt from the ground while wearing the orange and they never saw me. I don't think deer really see the orange. One final warning, bow season and squirrel season run at the same time so wear your orange when you are up in your climber to be safe and its the law.

Maybe I should try it out there again for rifle, I had a couple of instances where people would come marching up the pipeline rifle at the ready and come right up to you at 9 in the morning....of course I was on the ground..but had my orange on...really inconsiderate..and dangerous..if a deer had of popped out between us...who knows what would have happened...run for cover I guess...but now with the climbers probably not so bad...and I know the pipelines get pretty crowded during rifle season...anyways...it is a great place to hunt...

I personally try to stay away from the pipelines, they are the eaziest access and will attract many hunters. Try to find places that are travel corridors for the deer, usually really thick and the brush is taller than you. Now, get in your climber and go 25 to 30 feet up and you can see down into the brush. I shot my best buck at 50 yards, I was just 70 yards from the road and 1/2 mile from the hunter camp on opening day of the 98 rifle season. I was in a natural travel corridor and he was chasing a doe. This area lead from the camp to some thick brush. I could see hunters in trucks going up and down the road that ran parallel to the corridor. My buddy shot a Pope and Young just 2 weeks earlier about 400 yards down the corridor from my stand.
