DOG

Hey guys!

Im Logan and im new to this (danny told me about it) and like danny i have recently just got a pup. Mine is a 12 week old female golden retriever. Her name is Casey. Im already really impressed with her level of intelligence. I can already get her to sit, lay, and chase a ball on command (instead of breaking right when i throw it) but when she starts to bring it back she will get side tracked and start to sniff around, unless we are at home. Does anyone have any advice on a way to fix this problem? I also was thinking about introducing her to a wing but i have been told that if you do it too early they will just eat it. Do yall think its too early? Any advice yall can offer would be great!

thanks

-Logan

p.s. here is a pic of her at 10 weeks old

Hey Logan,

Welcome to the site, its about time you posted, what have you been doing all night?  LOL, I hope we get some good info to help us out.  Later bro.

Danny G

PS Fellers Casey is an awesome dog, saw here yesterday and she is beautiful and was cool to see her chase that ball.  Waco showed more interest last night than ever.  He went picked up 2 balls I threw!  I was so happy :)

Welcome Logan!  That's a great looking dog.  I think in time the pup will start to focus more on retrieving.  From what I've read before it's best to just practising retrieving for short periods of time when they are that young and build them up to longer times.  You dont want to wear them out on it.  Maybe try putting them in an environment where there is nothing to do but retrieve (not many distractions).

Keep us updated!

Logan,

When Casey starts to lose intrest in bring the ball back start walking backwards away from her while you are calling her to come. As for the wing, you can try it but Casey may try to eat the wing. I started using the store bought scent from academy, its really the smell that you want them to look for. Also, don't just throw the ball or retrieving buck where she can see it, throw it in so tall grass or light brush to try to force Casey to use her nose to find it.

Danny,

Sense Waco is so young, don't throw the ball more than a couple of feet away and if he does not start bringing the toy back, walk backwards while calling his name as I told Logan to do with Casey. To extend the retrieve, I would toss the retrieving buck the few feet and while the dog is heading away to get the buck I would take about 5 to 10 steps backwards. Using this tactic will make it easier for the dog to find the buck as it was not thrown too far and when the dog turns around you are twice the distance from the him/her so it appears to be a longer retrieve. Also, when Waco is retrieving ok work him with Casey, she will be a little advanced compared to Waco because of age but the competition will work wonders when it comes to going after the buck.

PS Both of your dogs are very beautiful, looks like you made some good choices. One more tip, always stop playing the retrieving game with your dogs before they want to stop. You want the dog to be the one that wants to keep retrieving. With my dogs I will toss the retrieving buck or toy about 5 times to start with and then put it away. This tactic will leave the dog wanting to play more and the next time you are out you can get your dog to retrieve with more enthusiasm. Then each time you go out to do some training increase the number of times the buck is thrown and before long you will be able to throw it endlessly and he/she will wear you out wanting to play.

Waco has been sleeping so I hope he will be excited to get up and go to the pond!!!  I threw him the ball some earlier and he chased it 2 times then he just wanted to play with me so i stopped.  I am excited about him swimming, hope he does.  By the way is this thread weird and really elongated on your screens?  Later fellers.

Well i had a pretty succesful day at the park with casy! She voluntarily got all the way in the pond and swam to retrieve a stick! I dont know how good that is for 12 weeks old but i was happy with her. Here is one of the picks we took (me and casye on the left).

Hey Fellas,

That is me and Waco on the right.  He didnt do much, just watched Casy and then she pushed him in while they were playing so that was cool.  The water didnt seem to bother him but UI dont think it made his day either.  It sure did tire him out, he is in his kennel sleeping now, LOL.  We had fun and Casy is gonna be a good dog, she is cool to watch.  I cant wait for Waco to get bigger.

Hey Danny,

Once it warms up a little you can help get Waco used to the water by wading out yourself to about knee deep and then call him in. This is how I have started dog in the past.

Good lookin' dogs there...I remember when my dog was just a pup...now he is a quail hunting machine.  Work with them, don;t push it, and they'll end up being your best bud.
