OK, I am going to try to setup the hog hunt for Feb. 10,11,12 2006. This will be a optimum weekend because of the full moon. I'm going to contact Marvin and see if I can get it setup. Also, last year there were a few geese that were coming into the fields that he said we were welcome to hunt. I will let you guys know the details asap.

The hunt has been $50 per hunter for the weekend the last few years so I'm sure that will be the price again this year. I have not heard back from Marvin yet but I'm sure he will call after Christmas. I will post as soon as I hear back.

I still have not heard back from Marvin but I will give him a call tomorrow morning. Pearsall is about 15 miles from the ranch so if you want you can stay in town at a hotel. We usually camp at the ranch so we can hunt as late as we want and not have to travel when we get tired. There is plenty of camping space and a pretty nice camping area. Bring your atv or buggy because your truck will get pretty scratched up in alot of the areas. If it is wet we will need the atv's to get around because the place gets really muddy. I will let you guys know what is up tomorrow.

I'm interested, though I have never actually been hog hunting. You guys mind a newbie tagging along?
Also have a question. I've got a choice of two weapons. I've got a .300 win mag which I am guessing is way too much for a hog. My other option is a 12 gauge slug gun, but is that over-gunning it too?
Thanks,
Chris

Go with the .300 mag...we have seen some hogs between 300-500lbs so you may need the firepower.

I think 6 to 8 guys will be the max. The ranch is 2000ac but alot of it is open farm fields but there are plenty of hogs. Im starting a list below so if you want to go post your name and I will keep track. You will need to bring everything you need as it is primitive camping. Tent, drinking water, water to clean hogs, chairs, tables, stoves, bbq pit, ATV, etc... anything you think you will need.

How far of a drive do you think that would be from Houston? I might have two people, myself included, interested in going. Was a price for the hunt settled upon? Neither of us have any ATV's or much experience hunting hogs, we're from Michigan and don't have any up there, would anyone be interested in showing us how it's done? It sounds like a lot of fun. I'm definetely interested.

It will probably take 3 to 4 hours from Houston. The price is $50 for the weekend and you can take as many hogs as you can shoot. It's much the same as deer hunting during the morning and afternoon but you can hunt all night also using spotlights. We will bait out some spots and wait them out.

gman, if you don't mind two more people coming along, I'd love to go and as well as another guy I work with. I'm assuming normal deer rifles would be sufficient? Camo or orange? Should we bring our own bait...and what works well? Like I said, I'm not new to hunting, but definetely new to hunting hogs.
We're both available that weekend. Email me if you have any questions, crous1ca@rice.edu
If you don't want any newbee's taggin' along we'd understand, but we're really looking forward to learning.
Thanks.

Allen, I think you may be able to connect on a pig in 2 hunts and we would love to have you join us. If you are listed as pending please post and let me know if you are still interested. Here is the tentative list of guys for the hunt. If you are going and want to bait for hogs, corn and hogwild powder seems to work pretty well in the area. There are some stands on the property and you can bring some if you like. This is also a very good place to call for coyotes and other vermin...we usually get a couple of varmints on each hunt. I haven't heard if there are any geese hanging around but you may want to bring some steel shot just in case. we can also put together some drives to try to push some pigs to standers. If everyone listed below is going the hunt will be full.

Chris, just bring the money with you. $50 each. I'm going to take Friday off and head down Friday Morning. I should be there between 12pm and 1pm.
Directions From Houston -
I-10 west to San Antonio
I-35 South to Pearsall
Exit on to Ranch Road 140 and take a left, you will be heading east.
About 15 miles out of town on RR 140 there is a small brick building on the left at the turn off on 3615. Take a Right on 3615 (also called Mann Rd.)
Follow 3615 until you come to a T and take a Right on E. Goldfench Rd.
There will be a field on you right and then it will turn into thick brush. The first gate you come to on your right is the entrance to the Camp\ranch road. You will follow the road about 1/4 mile until you come to the camp which will be on you right. If you need more information give me a call. 512-826-2261. Do you know when you will be leaving Houston?

Garrett,
We will try to be on the road by 10:30-11:00 on Friday so we should get there with plenty of daylight left, we're hoping around or before 4:00. That's about the best we can do. We'll make sure to bring the $50, is there anything else that we might be overlooking? We've got a couple of coolers and camping supplies, food, etc. Oh yeah...what's the alcohol policy?
I'll probably give you a call in a couple of days just to make sure we've got all the details straightened out.

Garrett,
I've been on the road all week w/no access. It looks like things have picked up. I'm hoping to take off Friday as well but I'm not sure if I can yet. It might be a good idea if everyone posts their cell phone numbers - mine's 512-496-6556.
I'll be bringing gear, food and coolers, is there anything else we might need? My cousin shot some hogs last weekend near Laredo and said they were absolutely crawling with fleas (maybe because of the drought?) so it's probably a good idea to bring some latex gloves and flea shampoo. Do you know if sulfur dust repels fleas or what does?
I'm assuming everyone knows they need a hunting license to hunt hogs.
I'm looking forward to it.

Paul,
We take alot of hogs with clients all thru the year and in all areas from central Texas to south. I'm sure alot of folks would rather use gloves just because of the potential of disease with hogs. If you are careful and clean your hands, Ive never had a problem, not saying I never will but I think most things are just precautionary.
Some hogs are going to have more ticks and lice but just clean them, skin, quarter and put the meat on ice and you should not have a problem.
