Guys I have been hunting TX public land for 20 years or better. There are some great opertunities to harvest mature deer, turkeys and abundant small game. Hunting pressure has been the key to most of my sucess on public land hunting. It all depends on the time and effort that one wants to put into hunting unpressured areas. And u add into the mix the animals keen senses and it can be tough. My best deer to date came off of public land in Shelby county (137in eight point with a 19 7/8 spread) and numerous other buck lessor than that but for me its not the number of point or the score but to out witt a mature buck or smart longbeard in the pineywoods of East TX has way more value. And I live in Louisiana due to work and kids. I buy the out of state licencse to hunt the public land of TX. Buy the way I was born and raised in Shelby county TX.

Bexar county

I also utilize public land specifically for Dove hunting, but have had the opportunity to check out some great deer and hog public lands.  I feel that TPWD should invest more money and research into public land programs and make more property available and suitable for hunting.  For example, planting food plots, maintaing senderos, disking fields, cutting grass, etc!!!

I am ready to!!!! Turkey season starts soon!! You dont allways have to go far it all depends on the pressure. I would suggest that you get a deer dolly! I use a climbing stand or hunt off the ground. I do suggest that you hunt as close to bedding areas as you can get and get in the woods early! Once those deer get pressured they are going to the bedding areas. I dont hunt scrapes much. Trail to bedding areas! What part of e-tx do you hunt? I hunt Sabine NF and other small tracks that most dont know about.

I am looking for public land in the south texas area, preferably to run my hog dogs. I am guide (Quail, Dove, Turkey) by trade and a kennel owner. I have several smaller ranches that I can hunt hog on, but during deer and other seasons it gets a little harder, I mainly want to keep the dogs in shape and get my pups on a few hogs. Does anyone know of land in this area that allows hog dogs? Thanks

If there is a season going on dogs are prohibited on public land. You can check with your local Game Warden or the forest service to get the regulations. Im not familiar with south texas public land. But that a starting point.
