Other than Red Stag being the European cousin of Elk, what is it about the photo that tells you Red Stag versus young elk or a hybrid (can't they cross breed?)

Elk, Sika & Red Deer can all interbreed.  The main beams on this animal point upwards instead of downwards as in Elk.  Also the next tines down from the top point inwards instead of upwards.  Could be a cross but looks like a Red.  Im assuming the animal was taken free range or else the ranch would know what it is.
