so...
if you are on a deer lease, and there are hogs coming in at night do you continue to hunt them during deer season at night?

I would definitely make a call to the local sheriff to let them know, as I have been told to do that by the game warden when I asked in the summer..

but that was outside of deer season

I would of course call the game warden to discuss

I know growing up if you had lights during deer season you were pretty much guilty of spotlighting

I have a TB red light on one feeder with a dusk to dawn switch I am going to disable during deer season and wouldn't have lights on a gun while deer hunting

We used to varmint hunt (ringtails, racoons, etc) in Williamson County with spotlights during deer season and the game warden was fine with it - as long as we called him that day and let him know where we were and when we were going.  But, that was over 20 years ago.

I think you're right on the mark though to talk it over with a Game Warden before you do anything and stick to exactly what he tells you.  Times may have changed, but I think you'd be OK.

I posted the same question on Texasboars.com

most people responded they hunt hogs at night durng deer season with lights and have never had an issue...

I still think it's a good idea to call the sheriff's office, as they would be the one to be fielding any calls of "gunshots at night"

that's what the GW that I spoke with said to do....

a phone call is a lot easier than having a GW having to get out of bed on a cold night only to find some perfectly legal guys hog hunting..

one guy said if he shoots a deer, he deals with it first, before doing any night time hog hunting...  now, if there were a dead deer laying there at night after a gunshot was reported.. that could be bad..  better to play it safe

hey I have the same problem in weimar.  15 hogs or so have been coming to the corn feeder for 3 weeks in a row every night.  that is unusual because they r usually here one day gone the next but they have been here every night. I wiill prolly just got out there and shoot the hogs if i see them but call game warden right away if shoot one.  Because I have been out there twice at night and havent seen them.  Sucks bc deer arent comin g to that feeder much bc hogs and deer dont get along, got any new bucks coker?  I got a big typical 8 that is prolly 135

GOOFY Removal of feral hogs by any means possible.....Common sense, courtesy and good intentions go a long way. Each and every county and game warden is going to have a different answer. Hunting feral hogs at night with artificial lights is a lawful means of removal any time of the year. In fact, if you are hunting them to protect your property or to protect the property of the landowner you are hunting on, you aren't even required to have a hunting license. Odd, but true. Use common sense, when in doubt....ask the person that's going to be writing you the citation and confiscating your guns. A simple courtesy call goes a long way! Nobody likes to get woken up in the middle of the night by the phone. And when he arrives to where you're hunting, he'll be less apt to believe your good intentions of only hunting hogs rather than deer than if he had been notified prior to your scheduled hunt so that when he does get that late night call.... he can reassure the caller that it's just the hog hunters on the where-ever ranch removing hogs that are damaging property...AND he get's to keep his jammies on! Everyone's a winner that way. Play it safe rather than be sorry later......give the warden a convenience call.

I have hunted hogs a bunch at night, just never deer season

I wouldn't want to call a GW at 3 AM to say "hey, sorry I woke you, but, I just shot a hog"

much better to call the day of to the local sheriff's office and inform them and perhaps a call to the GW as well.  I have been told by the GW just to call the sherrif's office for the county

SHAKE Like I said....give the GW in the county you're hunting a 'courtesy' call before hunting......8-5 are usual office hours for most folks. Waiting to call after you shot one might just get you one of those citations I mentioned! Every warden is different and wants certain criteria met. It's legal to hunt feral hogs at night with a light during deer season. It's illegal to hunt deer at night. That's where the common sense come into play....You've already done this....and your warden wants you to notify that counties shefiffs dept. ....probably they do the 911 call monitoring. Most late night calls to the wardens are from people seeing spotlights at night and hearing shooting. I'm not trying to tell anyone what they should do....just trying to be helpful since my profession allowed me to hunt in many parts of the state and a lot of the time at night. every warden in every county is going to be different. Even though I was authorized by the state to hunt when I wanted to on cooperating properties, I always informed the warden in each new county I was in of my intentions whether it was deer season or not. It's just being courteous and invoking a good working relationship.
