Ok 349 yards did not know it at the time. I was lying down prone on the side of a hill in Van Horn Tx. I was shooting at a Mule Deer. He never moved a muscle. My scope was 3x9 leupold and I was shooting a Model 70. I hit a little back and needed another shot to finish him off.
Hey how you doing Ricky? Don't think the 30-30 will reach that far.

280 yards with a model 70 270 with a Simmons 3x9. Didn't now how far at first so I hit the whitetail a little lower than where I aimed, but still a clean harvest.

550...javelina.
That being said, I have only taken one trophy animal at over 300 (pronghorn at 350), and if possible like staying within 200 yards. That's my comfort zone.
I have alot of buddies that are getting into the long range thing, and in my opinion it will mean alot of wounded game.

Oh, and I will give my buddy Billy Rhodes credit for longest shot I've ever witnessed at 650 yards on a doe. Impressive.

Back when I was young (and could see) 17yrs old. Don't know exact distance. Dad and I took 2 mule deer, Colorado, side by side I shot a JC Higgins 3006 hand loads, 2ft. elevation over back. Clean kill on both 732 steps down hill. Believe me I would not ever consider a shot like that again. My deer---5 x 5 31.5" spread, Dad's deer---34" spread 8 x 7.

Dec of '08. My first deer with my new rifle at the time, Winchester Model 70 Coyote, 300WSM. Shot a doe at 347 yards. Perfect shot, the shot hit the doe and she never flinched. She walked 10 feet and dropped. Never knew what hit her.

550+ yards, 9 pt whitetail buck, Remington Model 700 Sendero in 7mm Rem Mag., Kimble County, hunting with shooting sticks up on the side of a canyon. 40" hold or so. Shot under him at first. Never did know the exact distance since my rangefinder limited-out at 500 yards.
Hardy's right on the long range hunting. I try to keep shots within 300 yards, depending on the rifle and only after a proper set-up (we use a Harris bipod if we think we might be shooting over 100 yards). Hunting with both a .308 and 7mm, I try to keep that .308 at 200 yards or less. But, we practice at 300 yards and have 200 yard zeros on the guns.

Spike at 300 yards even, before I heard Hardy's opinion regarding shooting spikes before they mature. Now I will not shoot a spike, unless its at least 3.5 years!!

OK, this is not that long of yardage, but the target (turkey neck) was pretty small. I was hunting in Florida a few years ago, and they have a fall turkey season, rifles are legal. I spotted a really nice gobbler 110 yards out , and he spotted me at the same time. In the middle of the swamp, I had nothing to rest on so I took the shot off handed. Figured I'd either nail him or miss clean. Perfect neck shot. Savage .270.

Just could not resist signing in. First my wife. 400 yards uphill at a 56 1/2 inch KUDU in Zimbabwe. Shooting a Browning BAR (stock cut to fit her pull) in 30:06 with 180 Federal Premium Ammo. Scope was Pentax 3-9. The animal moved all of ten feet after a perfect heart shot. She is good but also realistic. She had a rest on tree trunk and is thankful for the shot. Feels there had to be some luck.
Mine was 350 yards at a Mule Deer in Wyoming with a BAR 300 Win Mag and 180 GR Federal Premium. Scope is Leupold VarXIII 3-10. I have a lot of confidence in this rifle. I have used it for all big game including Whitetail for 20 years. It is a flat shooting beast.

Yes...but the two main problems are a place to consistently practice at that distance, as well as the escalating cost of ammunition when you can find it.
What few ranges we have in the DFW area usually go out to 100 yards, with a couple of private ranges out to 200 yards. There is a thousand yard private range in Stephenville (100+ miles away from us) and a new, private 800 yard range in Whiteright we just found on the NRA's website (35 miles N of DFW). We're checking on that one.

I allways set my scope at 2in high at 100yrds, If you find that range north of DFW, and it is any good please let me know. I would love to have a range of at least 200+ yrds. Thanks William

Two years ago I took a large nice 7 at 550+ with my 25-06. I have fored that gun so much I know what it would do. There was no wind that morning and I had a round bale of hay to rest on. I pretty much learned to shoot in the Marine Corps, long range anyway. With the bullet (100gr) +1.5 in at 100 yds I pulled @18in over his back and still almost shot over him. I never should have taken that shot, my dad said it was all luck.
