Any Marlin 336 owners out there?

I am going to mount a Leupold Rifleman scope to my 336 and was wondering about ring height.  There are low, medium and high rings available from Leupold, but I don't know which ones to pick.  Low might be a problem with hammer clearance.  Anyone used the Medium successfully?

I used the Hi Rise mount on the ones that I owned and later used by my sons. By using the Hi Rise See Thru you'll be able to use you iron sights if you're in thrick brush or have to take a quick shot.  Just my .02 cents worth

I don't have a 336, but I use a Marlin 1895. I use the Hi rise mounts on it. I agree with Ron. Its great to be able to use either scope or iron, as per situation. My 1895 is a .45-70 that I use for hogs and being able to use both is a big advantage.

Guns don't kill people....Its those pesky little bullets making lots of holes that all the blood leaks out of.

One of the reasons I ask is that I've heard a few folks say that you should go with a lower mount so that the scope more naturally aligns with your eyes.  I've heard a few opinionate folks say avoid the see thru mounts because they make the scope too high.  I kind of like the idea of the see thru mounts, but don't want to have an uncomfortable scope positition either.

You've heard right tom_in_austin.  The comb on the stock is not high enough to support your cheek properly.  Too high of a scope mount will cause you to crane you neck and will result in an inconsistent cheek-weld.

The low rings from the Rifleman series should work with scopes of 32mm objectives or less. You may have to fold the rear sight to get the clearance. Larger objective scopes will require the medium rings up to 42mm I think. Marlinowners.com has a wealth of info on this. Hope it helps.

Regarding the hammer clearance, this is resolved by using the hammer spur. Replacements are available through Marlin or Midway,Brownells and Unckle Mikes I think. There are two different types that depend on the year of your Marlin.

Low mounts align more naturally for many people (depends on a person's length-of-neck) but, you should keep the scope as close to the bbl axis as possible if you expect to rely upon published trajectory data.

Scope height is usually expressed/assumed as 1.5" above the bore in published data, unless stated otherwise.  (Iron sights are typically 1/2").

I mounted a 42mm on my 336 using Weaver 4x4 medium height rings and had a whisker of space to spare between the objective end and the bbl.

Beware that not all scope ring heights are measured in the same way.  Some are measured from the dovetail to the bottom of the scope tube, while others are measured to the center of the scope tube.

I've never known of a scope to contact the hammer, but many sit low enough that it is impossible to manually draw the hammer back (or safely lay it down) without the addition of a hammer extension tab.

I'm late to the commentary here, but from a guy who has lilled bucks nearly within sight of the capitol (LONG time ago...) I refer you to my "Short Story" at http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=68752                           As You'll see, I also highly recommend cast bullets and open sights, even for my 58 year old eyes.... Everything is reveald there... bullets, poder, load, etc...

1948 Marlin, open sights ...Sixty seconds, Six shots... Six pigs dead right there, weighing from 220 down to 85 pounds, 49 to 89 yards. HEEHEEEEEeeee....What fun!!!!     If you really have to have a scope, I understand, and it's your choice... but there ain't nuthin' like cowboy guns and cast bullets...  pls1911@yahoo.com
