How high of a tripod stand do I need to hunt whitetail?  Is 12 ft to the deck high enough? or is 16 ft better?

I always try and put one to the height of my surrounding cover to conceal.

Same here, the main thing is to give yourself plenty of cover on your back so as to not be silhouetted. I currently hunt fron a pecan tree in ariver bottom and my tripod MAY be ten feet of the ground. A little low but very effective as lond as wind direction is in my favor.

I place my tripod kind of in the the open, but next to a few small trees.  I had a 12 foot one last year and was hardly ever seen. One smart doe seemed to point me everytime but other then that it was great because it blended me in to the tops of the 100 foot tall trees that were 100-200 yards away.  I didnt stake it down haha and the wind blew it over and bent it a little so I returned it and did an even exchange and got a 14 foot one this year. It will only work better because it will get me higher off the ground, i will be able to see more, and in my situation it will blend me in that much better with those trees off in the distance.  2 feet makes alot of different whether its from 10-12, 12 to 14, or 14 to 16.  IN MY PERSONAL OPINION 10 is way too low. 12 foot minimum

HAPPY

Thanks everyone for the good advice.  I will be mostly bow hunting out of a tripod.

I have an older tri-pod that is about 10ft. and I find that a little low.  I would rather have one 16ft.   Placement is key though and depending on where you hunt, low might work better than being above your cover.

I have a five foot tall stand when backed into an ebony tree/bush in south texas is effective when I have taken care of scent issues including using a BREATHEOUT  device to kill breathe odor which seems to be the MAJOR offender. Check this website --  barrickspecialties.com  --  for the latest in scent signature control

Match height of stand to cover.  We have 7'  10'  12' and a couple of 15'  Each has its place and pupose.

I put a 12ft tripod in the  surrounding areas . the  background ws great. how ever, Ive been winded countless times. I use cover scents, camo, ect, and still  gett winded. I wish I woulda got the 16ft. Ive been bow hunting the same woods for  20yrs and I am stumped.

Do hogs warn off deer?
