TROPHY_HUNTER

I am a dedicated dove hunter with 15 years of experience in the field and have done a tremendous amount of research on how to attract wildlife specifically dove to your property.  The most important thing is to have food, cover, and water.  Food can come in the form of native sunflower, dove weed, millet or you can plant grain, corn, milo.  The key is to utilize heavy equipment to clear fields for native food plots or planted.  Use disk or plows to turn the dirt to promote native plants to grow.  Mow areas of high grass to leave bare ground for feeding birds.  Look for brush lines that can provide shade and clear small fields (10-50 acres) so that you can disk strips to promote native plant growth.  Shelter is also importan, doves like to roost and rest in old mesquite or oak trees, but especially like old dead trees.  I have heard of a technique to prep mesquite tress by trimming the branches to make the tree ideal for landing and roosting in.  The final piece of the puzzle is water, doves like good tanks or water that have clear ground, no weeds or high grass.  One of the best tank I ever hunted that attracted lots of dove was a cattle puddle that kept getting wider from cattle coming to drink wated.  The doves was land in the holes left by cattle hoofs and drink water from there.  You can also use small man-made water containers like disk to hold water so doves can land on te ground and drink.  Adding powerlines is also a good dove attractant, they like to land and rest before and after feeding.  Having good clear fence lines is also good for dove fields so they can land on and rest.
