Andy, that buck on the first picture is still pretty young, I would say 2 1/2 but the picture is pretty dark. On your game cams, what brand is it? I have used some Stealth Cams that aren't worth the money spent on them. When I started with my game cams a little over 3 years ago, that is what I began with, and they are a pain in the butt, to say the least. Normally they would do as you say, take two or three pictures and be battery dead after that. The reason is the flash takes up too much power that the batteries can't handle. I went to Moultrie Game Cam 4.0 and have been very happy with them. The price keeps dropping on them too. I paid 109 when I started, I see where Bass Pro Shop and Academy now have them for 69 bucks. Good quality product that in my opinion out performs some of the higher dollar cams. (Look at my photos, under shasto, all except those with temp and moon phase were taken with Moultrie Game Spy Cam 4.0) My brother bought a Moultrie 6.0 with all the bells and whistles, I don't like the infrared feature because the night pictures come out black and white. Don't believe those that tell you the flash will scare the deer off. The only time the deer leave in my place is when they are full from eating, and I have the camera set about 3 feet away from them. (Look also in my picture called "game cam set up and see how I made them portable to take pictures from different angles.)
By the pictures you posted seems like you have an excellent deer herd. Keep up the good work and let them walk. Just because Starr county has a 5 deer limit, doesn't mean people should fill all their tags and run down and buy tags for the kids, grandma, and grandpa, and all neighbors within a 10 block radius. Look at my pictures and see the improvements that we have done in 5 short years. I realize that you are limited if you are leasing. I used to lease and one of the most frustrating problems I experienced is building up a deer herd, pass up on bucks to have better quality bucks in future seasons, only to have the land owner jack the price way out of your range because there are trophy deer in his property now. What's worse is when he doesn't contribute anything other than land rental. I now own 140 acres of my own that I control and don't lease. Hope this info helps you out. Flo Barrera
