Just a question really this past season i hunted pretty hard and did not see any mature bucks i saw plenty of younger bucks that will be nice in a few years but i was just wondering if this is just a fluke or what? In the 6 years i have owned this place we have only taken one good mature buck and a few that have had messed up racks i have seen plenty that have good racks but are only 2 1/2 or younger

ANTLERS

We too experience what you are feeling from time-to-time. Alot of factors may contribute to your lack of seeing "mature" bucks. Last year was not a good year for us horns wise due to some unfavorable spring rains and then coupling with that excellent range conditions during the hunting season made it tough to catch the really mature deer during daylight. Sometimes I think it is just a crap shoot...

Hard

I would bet that you are hunting an area with a high density of lease hunters. It is difficult to get mature bucks unless you are hunting a well managed ranch of over 20,000 acres or a high fence ranch. I have seen many well managed "area co-ops" that have failed be successful. As long as you have hunters that want to bring home a buck because they paid for the lease and "deserve one", mature bucks are going to be scarce.

Well i own only 30 acres and i have a neighbor that owns 30 right next to me and we try to manage our places and all around us there is really no hunting pressure i believe we are the only ones that hunt our area and we are surrounded by a few thousand acres. it could be there is no hunting pressure on the other tracts of land and the deer would rather stay where it is safe?

Mark,

I'm sure you've already thought of this but there could be a number of additional things that might affect you not seeing mature bucks besides hunting pressure - deer density, deer travel patterns (topography, cover, bedding areas, water), proximity of doe groups, seasonal food (i.e. what deer eat during hunting season), etc.

How many does do you see on your place?  Are there any rubs and scrapes?  Even though you have 30 acres, depending on where the land is, there are several things you can do to improve the habitat and draw in more deer (food plots, water, mineral blocks, stand placement, limited hunting pressure).  Here's a TPWD link with some ideas.  You're probably doing many of these things already.

Yes we are doing a lot of things that i hope will pay off big in the near future. WE have 4 food plots that we keep going year round and this year we planted over 150 fruit trees on the property they will not produce fruit for about 3 years. We have several does that frequent our place with the hunting rules we can only shoot them during bow season with a bow or thanksgiving weekend with a gun. and we have plenty i was able to take my two this year and my neighbor took one it's hard to get them under control with the laws in place..
