Save Money Reloading???

QUESTION

Hi All,

How much do you have to shoot to actually save money on ammunition after you buy all the reloading equipment.   I know it is dependent on what you shoot...I shoot .308, 45acp, .223 and have just purchased a 45-70.  I have a lot of other calibers but these are the ones I shoot most.  The .308 and 45-70 are expensive rounds, plus most 45-70 round commercially available are loaded pretty light.

Just wanted to get a feel for what the experts think?

Thanks,

yes you can save some money, but the main reason for hand loading is you can custom taylor the ammo for your guns. if you shoot ball type ammo in the 308 then you will not save much if any. the 45/70 is loaded for the old trap doors and if you have a modern gun then it can be loaded to much higher performance. unless the 223 is a hunting gun its hard to beat the price of surplus or cheap ball ammo. for the 45 only use factory ammo for personal defence as a shister lawyer will make you pat if you shoot some one

No expert here, but I wouldn't get into reloading just to save money.  I looked into this a number of years ago, and it appeared to me that you can save money when you shoot a lot.  That is, the cost of individual components are cheaper, but not much, so in order to offset the cost of your equipment investment you really have to put through the rounds.

There's also the consideration about the hours you put in...if you don't really enjoy that type of thing, or have the time to do it and get reasonably good at it (especially if you want a bump in accuracy), I'd think twice.

I have been reloading for 20 + years. You can save some money, after your initial set-up.The best thing to do is to buy yourself a reloading kit that has the reloading press, scale, reloading book etc etc, kinda like the Rcbs has.

After that you can save money here and there.Right now due to the war and the NUT that was put into the whitehouse, certain primers ,bullets and powders are hard to find right now.

Once you get setup you will find that saving money is the bottom of the list when it comes to WHY you reload.I reload for hunting but I also reload for accuracy and target shooting.Once you learn how to load your own " custom" loads you will never look back at buying commercial ammo.Good luck with your venture.Any questions: I will be here to answer what I can for ya.

Been reloading for quite sometime.  Never did look back and never will.  I enjoy it and I don't reload for saving money.  I just like the knowledge it gave me on knowing my rifles capability and that it is performing at its best it can do.

Did ya take it up or throw it to the side?  Just courious.  Bob D.

i have been reloading for a few years now, i had to take a break from it tho i did not want to,(moved away from my stuff) i used to reload for my grandpa, my step-dad's .06 and my 7 mag,  i would reload for several hours at a time and devloped a load that is just amazing, i use 63.0 grains of imr 4831 with 150 gr. Nosler balistic tip or the 154gr spire point from hornady. its a cooking round. with the .06 i use a 165 gr hornady spirepoint over 58.3 grains of the same powder it too is cooking,  with that bullet and powder the red line load was around 63 gr. my grand pa taught me how to reload when i was 17, and he mistook my load for his and loaded the .06 up to 7mag specs lol and got a whole lot of kick lol. didnt hurt the gun but wow what a blast to shoot. call me crazy but i love heavy recoil, thats what attracted me to the 7mm rem mag. its a beast when reloaded. i could reload a box of 20 for around 10.00 when a box costed at a bare min of 15.00 to a max of 42.00 for 20 and yes i saved money. then i started to  experiment with differen projectials, and found the bt to be the best for my particular rifle. so yes and no to ur question, any one know of another good load for the 7mm for me to try?

If I load 500 rounds of .223 I have paid for the price of my reloading equipment.
