I've got some older cartridges that got wet and have some spotty corrosion and slight pitting on the brass case.  Obviously I'm not thinking of using this brass to reload or anything like that...I'm more than a little concerned about whether, if fired, the brass would stay together, potentially damage the gun, and/or extract easily.

Has anyone ever used ammunition like this and did they have any problems?

Without seeing the brass I can't say it is safe or not safe.  Rule of thumb:  If the corrosion is really deep I wouldn't recommend shooting them (appears to be half of the case thickness).  If it isn't too deep and just looks like surface corrosion (which most are) I'd use steel wool and clean the corrosion off of them and fire them.  I don't and won't shoot dirty brass in any of my firearms and can't recommend that for you either.

That's always been my understanding too.  I've tried cleaning them with solvent and old rifle brushes (much like steel wool) and unfortunately some of the cases are (at least in my opinion) pitted deeply enough where I can't use them.
