Supplemental protein feed questions

We have 3600 acres near Brackettville and we're about to start feeding protein at the end of January.  What would be a rough estimate of how many pounds of protein we'll go through per feeder?  I'm guessing it will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 lbs per month per feeder but I was hoping to get some feedback from some of you.

We are planning on putting out 4 or 5, 2000 pound feeders, starting on the first 1000 acre pasture and moving on to the next two pastures in the future.  Also on a low-fenced place what is a good ratio of protein feeders to acreage?  I've heard anywhere from 1 feeder per 200 acres up to 1 feeder per 450 acres.

There are a lot of things to think about. Have you done a deer count? Are there other aniamls that will be feeding? Try Purian's web site.

We are going to put pins around each feeder to keep the pigs and cattle out.  Have not done a deer count.  My gut feeling is we are around a deer per 12 acres though.  Nearly everytime you get in a blind you see anywhere from 8 to 20 deer.

I would say 1 protein feeder per 500 isnt a bad setup. However I go through about 2000lbs of protein per feeder per month outside of the hunting season. If my math is correct you could be looking at as high as $30,000 a year in protein if you had the setup you mentioned. If you have the resources and suitable land Id recommend plantinng a couple large food plots.
