For month's I have been hand working a custom Mauser 47 action in .308. Started by pulling the old barrel of the action(shit canned the rest), next we started truing up the action. Hand lapped the locking lugs and the bolt to the action. The barrel was a a steal of a find, bought a Remington 700 .308 bull barrel for $40. Threaded the barrel to match the action and short chambered it. Next was the bolt, chopped off the military bolt handle and tig welded an new handle in place and hand worked the bolt with files until just right. Replaced military safety assembly on bolt with Timney trigger group and after market bolt shroud. Ordered an stock from Richard's Microfit( 13 weeks lead time). Ordered a one piece solid scope mount from EGW(great people). Final chambered the barrel, set the Barrel on action(permanent).Customized scope mount rail, drill and tapped holes for mount. Stock arrives, start fitting stock to barrelled action(ie floated barrel ,finish sanded, cut recess in stock for safety lever). At this point we are up to present day on my project. I will cut and copy link's to above mentioned company's if anyone has ever thought about undergoing this project. I will Update this thread in the future when more progress is made. Here are a few pictures

That's sweet. You should be able to wipe a gnat's butt @ 300 yards with that baby. I wish I knew how to build a rifle like that. I would build me a beauty too.

Thanks guy's, I probably could have bought one just a little cheaper. But I can honestly say I built this one with a GOOD friend. MY goal when I started was to build a 1inch group shooter(or better). We will see very soon.

Beautiful gun. Be sure to post your final target results after you are finished. What kind of scope are you going to put on it?

Paul,
Sounds like you've done one helluva job on that rifle. I like that piece of lumber too. I'd put a real light finish on it but that just me. Keep us posted.

Paul,
Nice build. I've done 3 mausers myself and have used all the components that you have used (not all on the same gun). I also like the EGW base for the $$. Gotta machine off the charging bump, though which it looks like you did.
I've also found that you need to open up the rails a couple thou on each side to feed .308's in a full length M98 action, but maybe you won't have that problem on the shorter M24/47.
Keep up the good work.

Looks like you're building a real tack-driver there. Being able to do that kind of work with your hands is a gift. I mounted a scope once and got so puffed up and proud of myself I popped the buttons off my shirt. Like the others, I look forward to your range results.

NO, I have been fighting with BSA OPTICS over that POS scope I bought, just got it BACK from them yesterday and both threaded lens caps are stripped out wont tighten. I flip the scope over and low and behold a sticker that says BSA QUALITY ASSURED! I gonna buy a Nikon I believe. I will update this thread when I shoot the rifle!

Ricky none to speak of, I shot about 7 rounds through it at 50 yards to site it in. Action shifted started rubbing the stock had to float the barrell a little more. I was shooting 147 win fmjbt over runs I had one nice size group you could cover with a dime. I will post pictures of some hundred yard groups when I get to go. Thanks for asking

AHH Ricky I am in the bonding stage with this beloved weapon, as we progress closer to season I will spend endless days and nights with it. On a different note just got done appliying Birchwood Casey's to the stock and hand sanding in between each coat with 2000 gritt sandpaper, coming along rather nice. My plans are to head to the range this weekend if it don't rain 10 inches again this weekend.

A sweet looking machine, Paul. And you're doing it right by taking your time.
Forgive me for saying so, but the break-in of the tube is truly critical to the accuracy and life of that baby, so shoot one and clean, shoot a couple and clean. It's a tedious, painful process, I know. But after waiting as long as you have, you certainly don't want to blow it at this point.
When it comes to fireforming your brass, as the great P.O. Ackley said, "Save the Cream of Wheat for breakfast". Use good stout loads to fireform, mate.
I'm looking forward to seeing that thing shoot bugholes.

Ah, one thing more I meant to comment upon: Yeah, you probably could've bought something off the shelf for the same kind of money or less. Look at the fun you would have missed. And this one is YOUR creation.
Nothing beats that.
