From what I hear the hunters out numbered the mosquitos 10 to 1. We were well into an area that we don't see people. We let all deer pass as there was nothing we wanted to shoot. Several minutes later a war broke out. There must have been people every 100 yards back in there. I bet they shot all of the 4 yearling that went by us. Antler restriction will be in effect for next year so you better pass on those young deer or you won't get a shot for the next 3 years!

well im going for hogs mostly so unless i see a big buck i wont shoot. By the way would you mind giving me some insight as to where you were? Im in a pretty desolate area, the north west corner, only seen 2 other hunters but damn this stuff is so thick i dont understand how your supposed to hunt it except for sit where the pipeline is and still hunt....is that what most people do? I cant get over how thick these woods are, the only feasible hunting spot ive found is the pipeline...

I also hunt the SHNF mostly for deer, but I've had a hankering lately to find a hog. I hunt alone and would love to have some company; for companionship, comraderie and the safety of having a backup if something should happen and one of us should need medical help.
I have maps for both the general SHNF and the Lttle Lake Creek Wilderness. I've never tried the Lake Creek wilderness. I stopped by the ranger station on FM1375 just west of new Waverly and the receptionist stated that when someone got lost and a man hunt was initiated, it was usually in the Lake Creek Wilderness.
Anyone that wants to have a hunting partner just needs to email me and if my schedule will allow, I'll be happy to accomodate.
My weapon of choice is a Glenfield Model 30A (Basic Version of the Marlin 336) in .30-30.
My email address is: skspence@charter.net
I live 9 miles south of Conroe close to The Woodlands and can be at I-45 & FM1375 with an hour's notice.

Just FYI, it is my understanding they will write you a ticket if they find you sleeping in your truck, in the forest, or anywhere outside of designated camp sites at SHNF during hunting season.
Many don't know this so I thought I would pass it along. The regulations are in the Annual Hunting Permit book. As the 2009 deer hunting season approaches (sounds weird saying that in May doesn't it?), let's remember deer don't wear hunters orange. Always be sure of your target.
