Feed Protein and Corn at the same time?

Just curious what the proper way to feed is. I have tried using Purina (I think) Antler Max or something protein pellets. However, I have also been feeding corn at the same time. The deer do not seem to touch the protein pellets at all.

Just wondering if I should not feed them at the same time or what.

I would change to record rack and the protien may be to hot might try 16%. The way I would do it is to shut off the protein right now for the simple fact of cost. With all the acorns and browse still left they dont need anything right now. I would go to straight corn. The day after deer season is over I would start the protien back again. No one thinks about it but the most important months for horn growth are January through April. April being to me the most important month of all. I prefer record rack because in my expirence record rack kicks antler max butt. We saw a 20-30 lbs increase in body weight the first year. Within the first 2 Years we saw a huge increase in antler growth. Thats my .02 good luck

I feed protein year round. During the rut is very important so they keep their body wieght up and dont have to struggle so hard after the season to get healthy again. As far as them eating the protein with corn running too its to much 50/50 corn protein mix a couple of times. This way the deer get used to eating the protein. I only had to mix it once and the deer have been eating it really fast ever since.

We started throwing corn in September at our feeding stations and left protein (Record Rack) in the gravity feeders.  We keep protein going year round, but there is a noticeable drop in protein consumption when the corn comes out.  That's fine with me, its their choice and cheaper anyway.  In January we go back to the gravity fed feeders at a mix of 150#s corn to 50#s protein and increase protein incrementally until we are back up to 100% protein by April or May.

Just the way we do it; seems to work.  Might be worth a try.

We feed both on a 50/50 ratio. The deer eat both well. When we first started, the deer would eat all of the protein before they would eat the corn. This can get expensive, but it really has helped the deer herd a lot.

Thanks for the reply guys. Well we put up this gravity feeder (with protein) next to the corn feeder. We have been running corn almost year around this past year. (Just a little bit to keep them coming.) Anyways, they do not seem to touch the protein. We even scrape it out on the ground and it just turns into a mound of mush.

I guess we will try something different next year and maybe back off the corn.
