Hot loads!

A friend loaded me some Bal tip 100 gr. in a 25-06. These were the first time the shell had been reloaded, after you shoot one of them the primer comes loose and when you try to bolt the shell out it will freeze the ejector lugs on the bolt of the rifle. What factory ammo in bal. tip shell would be the best for me to shoot in this gun? My gun likes 100 gr. bullets.

if the primer is coming loose or flattening STOP shooting them, just by those facts your pressure on the action is to high. Check your load data again and start over.

Thanks alot Paul, they jammed the action on this gun and had to take it apart to free it, the primerdid. it s way too hot for that gun. I will have someone load me somemore. Are they any factory balistic tip that are any good? I bought some Winchester for my .270 and they shot great? I wonder what they would do in the Rem. 25-06?

Thanks again for your help!

Eddie

I had the same problem you did with my 25-06.  Like Paul said, don't shoot another round of that ammunition in your rifle.  Mine happened with commercial ammunition, so even with that stuff you have to be careful.

I would also shy away from lighter (100 grains and under) ballistic tip type bullets in a .25-06.  I've had them split on a deer's shoulder and make a real mess (made 2 entry holes and vaporized practically every organ in that deer's body cavity).  Maybe a stouter bullet design in those weights might work, don't know.  3200 fps or so is really moving along.

Every gun likes different ammunition, so keeping in mind the above I'd try these commercial loads:

Federal 100 grain Triple Shock

Federal 115 grain Nosler Partition

Winchester 110 grain Accubond

After my little problem I went with a Federal 117 grain BTSP moving just under 3000 fps and never had another problem.

If you want to shoot handloads I would find look through a speer/nosler, etc. book and find their most accurate loads. Then work up a few loads in that grain wt., and a few more with a few grains up and down the scale. Shooting max loads makes fast bullets for sure, but it also contributes to shooting out your barrel faster and accuracy usually isn't the best. I can look up a few if you like.

Loading for the 25-06 has to be done very carefully.Because it has such a small bore and a large case, the pressures can rise up quickly.Always weigh each charge carefully and start low and work up towards the max for your rifle.I always shot the heavier 117-120gr. bullets.I think if I was still shoot the 25-06 today,I'd shoot the 110-115gr. bullets.I shot 51.2grs of IMR-4350 with a 120gr. bullet and was getting 3100fps with groups under an inch, but that was my rifle and I recommend not to start at this charge of powder, always start low and work up.

Mike thanks for the information, I had a friend that loaded for me. Anyone have any idea on a good ballistic tip that I can hunt Deer with. I love hunting with this gun, very accurate. Has anyone tried the new Remington ammo ballistic tip. I once used Remington pt.soft pt. ammo and it was accurate buttttt I did not have much luck bringing the Deer down. That is why I like the ballistic tip shells, hit them they go down!!! Thanks to everyone for the great information. I am not shooting anymore of th high pressure loads, thank to the people on this thread.

I personally like the Nosler 115gr BT, but I reload.  I'm not sure who uses the Nosler BT's in their factory ammo.  If you ever decide to reload yourself I can give you pointers on the Nosler bullet, powder, primer and case I use in my Encore.  I don't ever use max loads for any of my rifles.  bnb2004@gmail.com  Bob

The nosler BT in 90gr. and 100gr. shoot the best groups out of any of my 25-06s.I have kiiled elk, mule deer, whitetail and varments with them.I will look up some of my load data and respost it for you guys.I also have a load for the Accubond that I am getting less then 1/2 inch groups out of at 200 yds.

Wow thqanks Ricky that will be great. I was thinking factory loads, but after going through the different types there are not many choices for 25-06. There was at one time lots to choose from, not now? Yea I will get to loading them up with the data that will sent. Thanks and have a good day and good hunting.
