If you have the time...I would send in a soil sample and find out exactly what type of soil you are dealing with.  I sent my sample to Mossy Oak.  It cost $7.50 and I got the results back via email within 3 days.  They recommended their product called "Texas Draw".  It's a blend of Austrian peas, chicory, clover, wheat, and one other that I can't remember.  It is suppose to be a drought tolerant blend.  They also recommend what ratio of fertilizer to use with the soil.  Hope this helps.

Tate,

I have been planting a mixture of seed oats, wheat, rye, and turnip seeds in my food plot. I to have sandy soil and these have done great every year. The turnips and rye, I just through on top of the ground,  after covering the oats and wheat. It has been a deer magnet!

Tate:

Rye is particularly well suited for sandy soils.  Do you have clay underneath or just deep sand.?  A would personally start with a simple mixture of oats and winter rye (not ryegrass, that stuff will invade a plot, and provides little nutrition to deer). A soil test will assist in plant selection, as knowing the pH is important for selecting any proper legumes.  Is this for fall attraction only?
