We saw one normal looking Red Stag. Otherwise we saw 5+ animals like this one (looks like a Red Stags) with two tall spikes. This property has Red Stag, Elk and Sika.
I wonder to what extent the "spike" nature of these animals is due to limited genetic diversity or could be caused by sub-standard food supply or both.
Have any of you seen a spike Red Stag? If so, do you agree that is what this animal is? Have you ever seen a group of Red Deer where all the males are spikes regardless of age class or body size?

I have seen large numbers of red stag spikes in both Europe and New Zealand. Not sure of the cause.

Ive seen plenty of red deer w/spike antlers. Since red deer, elk & sika will all interbreed, its impossible to say w/100% accuracy but it looks like a pure stag.

A friend of mine just outside of Austin raises red deer and this looks like one with the shorter nose but with elk on the same ranch it could be a cross.
Most Red deer and elk will have spikes their first set of antlers no matter the range conditions.

The spike that you saw looks like many of my babies, and mine are all 100% red stag. It is possible that if there are red stag, elk and sika it could be a cross, but like I said it looks just like my babies.

I took some more photos of this animal. There is a bachelor group of 5-6 and they do not all look as young as this one.

I have seen this type of Red Deer / Elk that some call "Silks" a cross between both Stag and Elk. Looks like that may be what you have here.

I would nearly say with 100% certainty that you have a young spike elk. First year antlers.

It is a one year old Sika Grande. This is a crossbreed between a sika and a elk. They are also known as a silk. Red deer have also been bred to sika. They look similar.

I would say elk. I am from wyoming/utah. That's all we have here. From what I've seen of red stags and sika deer, that is def. a yearling elk.

I have a deer lease in Huntsville Texas. I was out hunting pigs last weekend and Had what I think is a red stag walk out about 100yds infront of me. We have a sale barn about a mile from us where they sell extoics of all kinds. I've heard of them getting out from time to time but have never seen any, until Sunday. Long story short it weighed 300lbs and almost couldnt fit it into 2 120qt ice chests. It looked just like the deer at the top of the page. I was wondering if 300lbs was about right for a 1 and a half -2 year old red deer.

I gotta agree with svmoose, I am also from Wyoming, but living in Houston now. I've seen tons of elk that looked almost exactly like that. I will admit I have experience with red stags, sika deer etc.
