I want to know your opinion on,

The powder available for muzzleloaders...

Are there any that really burn clean ?

Do you use powder or pellets ?

Charge vs bullet weight ?

Bullets,

Balls, conicals or sabot ?

Weights for different animals ?

Do you prelube ?

Cleaning,

Shortcuts ?

Things you should never do ?

I have talked to a few hunters who say they run a solvent patch down the barrel after every shot. seems like a lot of extra work too me.

I shoot the PowerBelt bullets in my CVA and can usually go 6 shots without cleaning when sighting in for the season.

I use Pyrodex pellets, Is there a pelletized powder that burns cleaner ?

Pyrodex also comes in straight powder.  But it does in my experience burn a little cleaner then straight black powder. I am not sure but I think there is a black powder substitute that is supposed to burn extremely clean but I am not sure.

Hard Crisco or vegetable oil works pretty well for a lubricant.  Hard Crisco works really good on Maxi Ball rounds.  If you have a .50 caliber rifle you can use the plastic sabot rounds and shoot almost any .45 caliber round out of it.

As for cleaning I don't know of any easy way to do it.  I have used Dawn dish soap and warm water in a rubber made tub container and the ramrod and barrel like a syringe to suck it up and clean it out.   I always seem to get a little dirty though.

I can say that most of the black powder substitues are cleaner than just Goex bp.  In my T/C Encore .50 cal I use 777 loose powder and it will build up after the charge area in the barrel (I can see it very well after taking the breech plug out prior to the final cleaning before storing).  This is usually the reson why others and myself use a cleaning patch between shots.  By T/C Shockwaves are pretty tight going down the barrel clean let alone after 1 shot.  I can get it seated, but on the range I do use the solvent patch.  I use a 90gr volume charge of loose 777 w/ a Shockwave sabot and a Winchester 209 primer.

I also shoot a T/C Renegade in the .54 cal flinter.  I use only Goex FFg and FFFFg powders in it.  I use a roundball and patch and have used maxiballs years ago that worked very well for deer also.  I load this w/ 80gr volume load and I normally never shoot over 75yds.  I sight it in for 50yds and feel comfortable to only 75yds w/ the open sights.  I do get less fouling from this rifle and powder combination, but after a few shots there is a moisture build up on the pan (could be from the temperatures I've hunted in though).  Never seen this on the range thru the summer.  I would use T/C lube for the maxi's and have bought Remington maxi balls already lubed.  The ml isn't very picky and normally shoots anything you throw at it good.  I've tried 100gr volume charges and I didn't care for the added recoil (there was only a steel butplate on it at this time).

I don't take shortcuts on cleaning the ml's due to the chance of rust after sitting for awhile.  It doesn't matter how much oil you have on them they always manage to rust somewhere.  I've shortcutted w/ the cleaning of the trigger assy on the Renegade and it rusted all up pretty bad.  Sent it back to T/C and they fixed it for free.  Even though it was all my fault.  I like T/C Bore Butter for seasoning the barrels befoer storage and prior to loading.  It seems to help cut down on the powder build up in the Encore.  I don't use water inside my Encore barrel, but do the soapy water and T/C solvent to clean the flinter barrel.  I can remove it from the stock and use a hairdrier to dry it prior to oiling for any period of time.

I've shot the full sabot rounds in my .50 cal CVA before but was forced to clean it after each shot due to the plastic left in the barrel and i couldn't seat the next round properly, the ballistics were better than the PowerBelt rounds but the extra work required just didn't seem worth a group thats "1/4 tighter at 100 yards. Will pre-lubing the barrel help prevent the plastic buildup from the full sabot rounds ?
