ok i got me a browning bow carbon arrows field and broad tips and a target.
heres delima:
put up target yesterday shot 2 arrows sights low, one arrow in fence post and one through fence, that was enough. i need a place around austin round rock willing to help a newbie get set up and on target.
also what can i use for a target back stop?
i have a big enough yard to shoot just cant risk uncontroled arrows.
also need to get out and put this thing to use once it is sighted.
thanks.

Go to Tractor Supply and get one of those 4'x'6' rubber mats that they put in show animal stalls. Nail it to the fence. If you miss the target, it will stick in the mat. It's a little tough to get it out of the mat, but it won't go through the fence and stick in the neighbor's poodle.

Start sighting your 20 yard pin at 10 yards. You can't miss that close (I hope), and the difference in arrow flight between 10 and 20 is negligible.
Move out from there.
Keep yer eyes peeled!

just remember also that move your sight the opposit way you want to your arrow to go (down is up- left is right) i second the moving to 10yrd angle this will get you close as you get better start with baby step back to 20 then 30 good luck

Besides sighting it in at 10 yards, practice there too. That will give you the confidence in your mechanics. Get to where you can consistently put arrows in the small circle at 10 yards and work on a super smooth release. Once you have that down pat, you won't be far off at 20 yards. Your consistency might drop off a little, but you'll still be able to hit the small circle more often than not.
It won't be long before they all stay in the 10 ring.

Good post I needed some of this advice also.
Guns don't kill people....Its those pesky little bullets making lots of holes that all the blood leaks out of.

i dont know what type of set up you will be hunting out of, tree stand, ground blind, or tripod, but i always fling a few arrows from the sitting pos. i prefer to shoot sitting down. it will also help if you hunting from a tree or tripod to get elevation while practicing. hows it coming

If you could find an accomplished Bowhunter to teach you from the start, you will learn more and progress faster than one can learn and progress learning it all by himself. They say that practice, practice, practice makes perfect but, not so! It is perfect practice that makes perfect. It is so easy to practice wrong technique and a bad habit is hard to unlearn. Hang in there and Kevin's advice is good. Some questions are: Do you use an anchor point? What kind of rest is on the bow? Do you use sights or shoot instinctive? Where is the nocking point located on the string? Do the arrows fly well? Or do they porpoise or zig-zag. These are only a few things that cause trouble. A good start and the fun begins.

Brian: Bill's right too. You really do need someone to show you the anchor point and the follow through. That will help with the smooth release. A good archery shop will be able to help you to get the arrows flying true and straight without the porpoiseing. Did you get the big rubber mat?

Check out on paper testing your bow. That will tell how your arrows are flying. The following link will give instruction on doing a tear or paper test. http://domino.htcomp.net/bhn/columnists.nsf/07fad96a632bb6f6862564a500754dbd/d4291577918eb6a3862565a4003afb35?OpenDocument PAPER TUNING YOUR BOW
| Paper testing is the practice of shooting fletched arrows through paper for the purpose of determining if your arrows are leaving the bow properly. While it may be true that the paper test is the most commonly used method of testing employed by archers using compound bows and release aids, the paper test can also be used by finger shooters providing they are willing to accept a hole pattern which is slightly less than perfect ? compared to the perfect bullet hole typically expected of a release-aid shot arrow. |

If you start 5 steps back from the target that will set your 30yd pin then go to 10yd and set your 20yd pin. As far as moving your sights follow your arrow. In other words if you are hitting low move your pins lower if you are hitting left move your pins left. You will still need to take your bow to a shop and have them give it the once over to make sure the cams are in tune and that the rest and nocking point are correct they can paper tune it there as well. The best way to remember where to move your sights is follow your arrow!

It opens tomorrow here in Wisconsin!! I probably go sit out for a little while in the morning and in the afternoon. I usually don't get too excited until the end of October when the bucks start the rut.

Usually sports shops around here will check the poundage for free. Repairing your peep sight(?) shouldn't run you more than five-ten bucks including the sight.

always put your hand in the same spot, such as right behind your jaw, always. also to know if your peep is in the right spot for you, draw your bow with your eyes closed, when at full draw, open your eyes and you should be looking right through your peep.
