I saw some larger tilapia this last weekend and decided to try to shoot some. I'm not rigged for bow fishing so I used an old arrow and filled it with foam insulation so it would float. Her's one of the ones I got. I may have to do some more of this. It's pretty good fun.

Are Tilipia considered rough fish? I have a friend who goes to Amisted and snorkles. Last spring he and some friends spear fished a number of these fish. They were in an area where a clear water creek ran into the lake. Mexico side I think. They said there were hundreds of these fish there. And are these fish good to eat?

They are very tasty. You are to kill all you can as they are a rough and invasive fish. They usually show-up to spawn in about May and it makes them easy pickings. I would place them close to crappie in table fare.

HAPPY

In Texas you are supposed to eviscerate (remove guts) as soon as they are taken. Texas Parks and Wildlife - General Fishing Rules:

General Prohibited Acts

It is a violation to....

Fail to immediately remove the intestines from tilapia, grass carp, or any other fish listed as harmful or potentially harmful....

Good lookin' bow Tim---Bobby D is right on with his statement!!!

I have not found a rig that will fit this bow. I have found a way to extend a spool that will clear the front of the bow. I have looked at the rigs at Gander Mountain with the tie-off that slides up the arrow shaft after the release, but how do you keep the string from winding around the arrow through its flight and bringing down the arrow?

I have shot several more of them this weekend. I even got 2 good ones with 1 shot! I'm still using the foam filled arrows.

Get back in any grass and weeds in the creeks and coves and you can do ok. I like the middle of the day when these fish hang on the surface.

BOWHUNTER

Tim,

You need to go to a fiberglass bowfishing arrow, with no fletching, this will eliminate the arrow from spinning during flight. Have you tried a reel adapter the will screw into your stabalizer hole? You can get you one of those, with a Zebco 808. Put you some 200# fastflight line on there and your in buisness. you will want to use Muzzy or Shur-shot Bowfishing arrows, there a hole lot easier to remove the fish from.

Im gald to see someone else is shooting Talipia on Conroe, you wouldnt believe the guys that have told me that there weren't any in Lake Conroe.

Good Luck, and Happy Huntin!!

If you want to draw the Tilapia in you can put a bale of alfalfa hay in the water (3 to 4ft) and wait about 5 to 6 hours and it will be covered up with them. We put the alfalfa in the water and throw a cast net and get them by the dozen!

I read your comment on using alfalfa to lure tilapia would alfafa pellets work the same?
