IDEA

I recently constructed a Dog Training Table, much like the one in the plans available at : http://www.navhda.org/table.html

For those unfamiliar with training tables, the idea is to get the dog up off the ground for two reasons.  First, it puts the dog closer to you, which provides better eye contact and physical contact with the pup (less bending over to re-position him).  Second, it elevates the dog and puts him a bit out of his comfort zone.  This results in pup giving you more attention as you work with him.  Training tables are by no means a necessity, but they can help you along with obedience.  And I am using many of the suggestions in the NAVHDA "green book," which incorporates enough table work to make the simple and affordable construction of one worthwhile.

I am attaching a photo of Arrow on the table I built (well, my father and I built).  It is 2' x 8' and has sturdy bracing beneath because I know that sooner or later my kids will test its strength.  The top surface is cement fiber siding that should hold up to the elements well.  I may still paint it, but not decided yet.

In just a week of short lessons on the new table, Arrow has greatly improved in his obedience.  He is learning the command "whoa" much faster.  The table will also be used for the initial phases of retrieve training.  The idea is get the dog to where he is strictly obeying the command on the table and then slowly transition to the ground.  Again, I am not sure that it is a necessity, but I have already seen better training progress in just a few sessons so it seems worth it.

I would add a post that you can tie off a training lead attached to a training collar.

Keep yer eyes peeled!

Thanks, Luke.

Duckwhacker -- good idea.  I've been planning to add a post that will work for a tie-off and want it tall enough to use for raising/lowering a quail in a bag when I get to heavy distraction work.  Maybe I'll use metal conduit -- lightweight but strong.

I was just glad he took to the table so well -- only been working him on it for a week now -- convincing my wife that it enhances the appearance of our patio may take a while longer.  : )

PVC would also work well as a tie off. You will need it if you get to force fetching, which won't take long when you use a training table.

Also good for grooming the dog before hunts. I try to take down the hair around the paws and armpits before a hunt.

Keep yer eyes peeled!

Is it true, what they say about a owner usually resembles his dog?

Just asking.....just asking????

Yup.  My beard grows faster than Arrow's!

Just remember, although they say "life's too short to hunt with an ugly dog," the truth is "lookin' purdy never put birds in the bag!"    : )
